Fitness!

I'm just getting back into running. Where is the link to the challenge?

Awesome, glad to hear you're getting back out there! Here's the link:

Any miles you've logged in Sept & Oct will count if you add them in now, and we'll start a new challenge for the holiday season after this one ends.

Does this count daily steps at work, even if it wasn't specifically meant to be a workout

I think @Kris legit beat me last month but it had to be super close. I log on Sundays and apparently the challenge ended 10/31 and anything logged after that even though it is post dated does not count. I think I got beat by minutes not hours, though.

At any rate my beach break really did result in closing that gap! I happen to know just how much work went into that crown, @Kris. Congrats!

Thanks. I can’t believe I beat your time. I really amped up my walking at the end of the summer. I was going out for 2-3 hours a day. Still trying to get 2 now which is a bit harder with the shorter days but I have a reflective vest which makes me feel safer. I just wish the deer would stop snorting at me and making me jump, haha.

Ok, workout kids. I’m thinking about getting a rowing machine to help with my rehab as the weather starts turning to crap. Any of you own one/use one/have any thoughts about them?

I wish I had room for a rowing machine.
I really wanted an elliptical, but my ceilings are too low in the basement, which is the only place I have space to accommodate one. So looking at alternatives to keep working up my cardio while trying to get some semblance of strength back this winter.

I am historically an extremely out of shape individual, so my only input is that I have pleasant memories of using rowing machines when I was a kid. It's just a very physically satisfying motion.

I kind of like getting on a machine and just zoning out until my legs are jelly. Before I got sick I used to do 45 minutes at a good clip on the elliptical after weights every day. Solid sweat-inducing, cardio bump and certainly didn’t hurt the calorie burn off.

I feel like a rowing machine would fit the bill. Someone with more experience might be able to describe any potential downsides.

The best way to gain strength is to start lifting. My husband and I are looking to gift ourselves a set of adjustable weights for Christmas. I like to do at least one day of weight lifting and one day of yoga every week. You get strength from lifting and strength, flexibility and balance with yoga. I absolutely adore Zumba which is nothing but cardio, but I find that I can do more moves and dance longer if I also incorporate lifting with cardio.

Poor form on the rower will hurt you. Other than that, it’s pretty freaking great. Back when gyms were a thing I used to do alternating sets on the rower and air bike for 20 minutes post workout and the cardio boost, muscle recovery, and carry over to powerlifting movements was fantastic.

Yep. I’ve been lifting, mostly lighter weight and body weight/resistance, but I lost over 25% of my body mass in hospital. No bueno. I got my weight up to get me out of the danger zone, but muscle density is where I’m working now. I lost enough muscle that I’m still working on building up stabilizing muscles, so that’s a longer road ahead. It really sucks - I’ve never been this weak before in my adult life. So I’m trying to bridge back to the point I can actually get back to “real” strength training.

Ideally, I’d like to get with a trainer but since I wouldn’t be allowed near a gym for awhile, just trying to see what sort of progress I can make over the winter. Eventually flexibility has to come into the mix too, but one step at a time.

Got myself waitlisted a couple places for a Concept2. Hopefully my number comes up sooner than later!
It might be worth your while to lurk the in stock and the general chat threads at /r/homegym. I know the concept rower is one that a lot of people are after so if ti comes in stock they update the group in real time.

Yeah, trying to hunt a bit - particularly since the stock bot took a dive. Hopefully I can catch one.

Edit: Aw snap (do the youths still say that?) Got one!
