Anyone here use insole inserts in their running shoes?

I ran in an older pair of Saucony shoes this week and they gave me pain in the ball of my foot. I hadn’t worn them in a couple of months and that hadn’t happened with them before. In comparison, my current rotation of New Balance and Hokas aren’t super comfy and wish they had a tad more cushion. I also blocked plenty of running shoe ads on Instagram and now it seems I’m getting nothing but insoles, so it has me thinking if they work/are worth it.

Not for running shoes, but I got some Superfeet insoles a couple months ago because I love chucks and it's been a night and day difference

I hurt my foot pretty bad a couple years ago, had to do physical therapy and such. I never tried insoles, but it was the point I switched from whatever inexpensive running shoes I could find in my size (14 wide) to using Hoka Bondi 8s, which at least compared to what I was using before are super padded. It's also when I started tracking mileage on my shoes and retiring them at 400 miles.
Yeah! I like my Hokas. I have had Arahi (?) that were more supportive but I eventually ran them down. I have some Clifton’s and Speedgoat’s currently that are great. Recently had a coupon for a store so I got a pair of New Balance super cheap and while they’re fine, I wish they were more plush. Hoka’s aren’t super plush like you said, but compared to other shoes they’re much more comfortable.

At the beginning of the year I set the goal of running 1,000 miles, and today's run put me over the line. (My previous best in a year was just a little over 800 miles.)

Oh wow! That’s awesome!

I was curious because I run somewhat often. Lots of life things happened this year and my most active months I’d run 45~ miles. Last year when I had more of a regular schedule I’d run anywhere from 60-90 miles a month. I don’t have that same view, I assume that’s Apple Watch? I am just able to look at FitBit for some months as a whole but not for the year.

It's from the Garmin Connect app. I track all my runs with my Forerunner watch now...

Between grief, mental health woes, a long injury and general laziness I haven’t been very active this year. Walked a shitload whole in SF, hoping to keep some walking up for the next few days before going back to New England. Really gotta make a priority to get fitter this winter.

having been back in New England for three days, in which it has snowed or rained the entire time and the sun has not made an appearance, I’m reminded why I turn into a big fatty in the winter

Yeah… I bought a treadmill that I’ve at least used for walking daily but this weather sucks big time. It’s either annoying cold in the morning or rainy and dark in the evening. I have a headlamp that I’ve done night running with before but it’s hard to get motivated to do that compared to if it was not as dark. I’ve also had some tinnitus flaring up for the first time in one ear which has made me not want to go on a run wearing my earbuds.

I can do cold and dry or warm and wet (slower....) but not cold and wet. I live pretty close to the water too so there's always the "fuck you" wind coming off the water that makes everything that much more enjoyable.

Yup I agree with that. I ran a turkey trot on thanksgiving that was rainy and cold the whole time. I so wished it was even colder but dry.

Someone created a wrapped app for Apple Fitness. I was pretty impressed with my step count for the year. I have a Disney trip coming up next week, so I’ll check the numbers after.

I was not consistent with my strength training this year, but I plan on getting back on track after I clear this head cold and Disney. I was too focused on cardio and the scale and not sticking to the plan. I had been going 4 times a week for the last month before I caught this cold.

For the second time in as many weeks I've had a part of my run where I had to use the bike lane for a short bit (today it was construction that had torn up some sidewalk), and somebody swerved over to run me off the road. Normally I would chalk it up to bad driving, but these were slow roads (like 35 mph) and both drivers made a point of getting over into the bike lane early and making eye contact with me with a smirk on their faces. I was all the way over to the side of the bike lane and would not have affected them in their car lane at all, and if a bike had been coming I would have hopped off the road and given them the right of way.
