Fitness!

Did not expect to be slapped hard with life’s philosophical mysteries with this but here we are. A lot of great revelations and thoughts on culture in certain countries. I feel like both this story and the Britt Reid drunk driving incident are purposely not being picked up by mainstream media (and fans alike).
I'm thinking of getting a foam roller. What do you find are the cons?

I used to roll and stretch prior to every workout and sometimes after. I tried several rollers and finally landed on the hard black foam ones you see everywhere that are like 3' long and about 8" diameter. My opinion is firmer is better. Hard core rollers just use raw pvc pipes. There's been a lot of research and controversy surrounding efficacy.

The general consensus is using them won't be detrimental and can be useful in some cases. I stopped the whole routine in the interest of saving time on workouts and never really looked back. Occasionally, if I got sore or stiff I'd roll it out but I got better results modifying my routine to avoid the injury altogether.

I think there's some value in just mindful breathing and focused compression. Like getting into positions and rolling somethign out or working the surrounding tissues is a mindful practice that fosters mental connection to the body. Personally, I've moved into the philosophy that everything I do has to have a specific tie-in to my goals. I'm not training to be a world class roller and nothing about rolling translates to what I am training for so I did eventually drop it altogether.

I didn't take foam rolling seriously until the people recommending them to me were trainers and coaches. I just see them as a supplement to my stretching. The extent to which they reduce next-day soreness, I can't really say, because I tend to roll on the days when I'm also doing things that I already know are gonna leave me sore, but damn it feels awesome after a workout.

I registered for a competition in August. Having mixed feelings about the responsibility of going to such an event in a pandemic. The truth is, if I don't now I won't ever because I'll age out of the class that contains the record I seek to break. Here's hoping we have some serious downwards trends by summer and even moreso in 2022 when I would be traveling somewhere for a world record attempt.

A world record attempt?! Damn, that's serious!haha What record are you attempting to break in the fall? And which world record next year?

In August I should be able to take state records for Squat, Deadlift, and Total for my Weight/Age class (75kg/Masters where I currently hold the Deadlift state record). That total will qualify me to compete on a national stage of which the USPA has two each calendar year; one of which is international and the other somewhere in the US. Once qualified I have 1 year to attend a national level event to compete for a world record after which I would need to put up another qualifying total. The 2022 national event locations are still TBA.

The Deadlift world record for my age/weight class is 260kg (573.2lb). I can currently pull 238.5kg. I hope to pull 250kg in August and feel really confident that will happen assuming I stay healthy and injury free until then. I would probably have to shift my training focus to primarily deadlifts in order to get the extra 10-12kg I'd need for the World Record in 2022 so my overall total at that stage might actually go down. At this stage of the game adding any extra weight to my deadlift is a lot of work.

I hope to Squat ~190kg and Bench Press ~112kg in August to give perspective on my other lifts. I have to total 505kg to qualify.

Wow, that's awesome! Good luck, and be sure to keep us updated on how your training and events go between now and then!

The My Challenges page shows this challenge as ending March 31st, but inside the challenge it says Feb 1 - March 1, and I selected a monthly challenge so I don't really know when this one is going to end haha Assume it ends on Sunday and try to get some workouts in this weekend!

So last summer, I did the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee (1000km of running took me 122 days). It's taken a little longer to rest and rehab my knee from that than I thought, but I'm back (on my bullshit). So I signed up for a "Royal Flush" virtual run series (1miler, 5k, 10k, Half, Full) to complete between May and Sept. So I spent the night planning out a training schedule for the next 7 months. I always find it weirdly rewarding.

Weekly Schedule: Mon - Rest / Tues - Strength & Spin / Wed - Intervals / Thurs - Yoga / Fri - Tempo Run / Sat - Strength & Spin (or Ski) / Sun - Long Run

Goal Times: 1 miler - 6.25 min / 5km - 20 min / 10km - 42 min / Half - 1 hour 40min / Full - 3 hour 30 min. (No world records here, but if I hit all 5 of those I'd be pretty happy.)

Anyways, I see a bunch of y'all talking about Challenges. Like, within this group? What's the March Challenge? Is it too late to join? (I'm an extremely externally motivated person. The more goals I set the more likely I am to meet them.)

We've been doing a monthly active minutes challenge for probably a year or so now. It started on Endomondo, but when that shut down in December we moved it over to Map My Run. It's a lot of fun and usually we have about 10 or so folks in it! If you're interested in joining, DM me and I'll get you the details. Essentially you have to sign up for MMR, give me your email address so I can request you as a friend, then I can invite you to the challenge and you can join it (painful, I know, but a one time thing).

Speaking of the challenges, I don't know why MMR sucks haha but the challenge from February is all messed up. If you remember, I noted that I selected a month long challenge and one part of the challenge said Feb 1 - March 1, and another said Feb 1 - March 31. Well it looks like it kind of reset itself at the beginning of the month or something because the February data was lost. In the future I'll be sure to screenshot the standings on the last day of the month as to not lose where we were. I think @tvham was in the lead at the end of the month, but honestly am not too sure. Sorry guys!

I created the next monthly challenge and invited everyone who has been involved previously (be sure to join!). I also selected it to be recurring, so we'll see how that goes. But I already noticed the same weird date errors, so it's probably going to happen again.
