Fitness!

Kind of a milestone for me this evening.
I’ve been doing some after dinner walks for about a week now. Just over 2 miles. I’ll mix in some light jogging for a minute or two to get that heart rate up and to also move things along a little faster.
Tonight after I walked mile one, I decided to see if I could run the second mile, unbroken, and I did just that! Even got that heart up to 169!

Currently, this is me:

Yes, I am butt hurt. Has anyone else had irritated hamstring tendons? What did you do to make the hurting stop???
I've gotten this with deadlifting. It was more of an annoyance than debilitating. TBH I just pushed through it for a couple moths till it resolved. I was never clear what brought it on. I was not alone in this.

It went away for a bit, but it came back with a vengeance. I guess I will be bending my knees for my down dogs and forward folds on Thursday during yoga.

Bit the bullet and got a rowing machine. Never been a runner or a cyclist, but rowing always clicked.

In typical gear head form, I’ve gone and bought the Concept2 ones you get in the gym. Not cheap, but it’s so much better than the cheaper ones, and I reckon the price will motivate me to use it!

So far my first shot of it proved I’m out of shape. Time to gradually build up…

I have a Concept2 and it is truly buy once cry once. I also consider that if I were to need or want to sell it that resale value holds extremely well.

Here's a little program I worked through to acclimate (I consider myself a cardio lightweight generally min avg 1km/5m)

4 day weeks aiming to have interval distances = avg steady state distance for same time:
Week 1 - 10m steady state
Week 2 - Alternate 15m steady state and 10m intervals (30s on, 60s off)
Week 3 - 20m steady state
Week 4 - Alternate 20m steady state and 10m intervals (30s on, 30s off)
Week 4 - 12m intervals (30s on, 30s off) with last day 30m steady state
Week 5 - Alternate 25m steady state and 15m intervals (30s on, 60s off)
Week 6 - 30m steady state at avg distance * 0.2

I came out of this feeling like I could do pretty much any rowing routine and leaned much about using the computer for intervals and such.

At my fittest I was just above 5m for 1km, so we are at similar stages, I think. Think this first stage is getting some kind of core fitness back, as well as working on mt technique. My force curves are pretty good, but I think I can tweak them as I get fitter.

Followed yesterday’s ski up with a 5k Resolution Run this morning.

Is running 2023km in 2023 possible? 🤔 I think I’m going to try and find out. Averages out to 38.9km/week, which I get easily in the summer months, but is trickier up here in our never ending winter. 0B783225-C77D-4F49-A5BA-2ABA5D53AC11.jpeg

Whatever you do, don’t slip on the ice!!!

But really, I commend you on getting out in all that white stuff. I question whether I want to go to the gym when it gets under 40F/4C. Yes, I know I am a wimp.

I am not really sure if I want to change my fitness routine right now. I think I want to focus on eating less sugar—I would like to eliminate it completely but I’m trying to be realistic. I think my sugar intake has negatively affected my migraines so I’m going to try to work on my diet and continue with my current routine: Pilates on Monday, Zumba Tuesday, Zumba Toning Wednesday, yoga Thursday and Zumba Friday. I would like to work out more on the weekends, but with soccer starting and me work on meal planning and doing house cleaning, I’m not sure if I can fit it in.

No slipping! I have ice shoes (Solomon Spike Cross) for running in winter. And ironically, though not unexpectedly in retrospect, my only NSF on a race has been due to heat (It was like 38C/100F, and I hadn't trained for the heat.)

If you've got an exercise regiment that works for you, stick with it. Good luck on reducing sugar. One way I've found to reduce my sugar is replacing refined sugar based sweets with berries/grapes etc. (and sorry about the migraines.)

Is the soccer for you 'cause that's killer cardio. Or soccer for your kid(s)? When my kids played, if I wasn't coaching I'd usually squeeze in a run, especially if it's just a practice. Games I'd usually stay and watch.

It’s kid soccer. I used to run but I haven’t done that in years.

Yeah, running isn't for everyone. I just find kids' sports are such a time suck as a parent - I love my kids but that was NOT mentioned in any of the "What to expect when you're expecting" books - so I'm always trying to use that time productively and not just defaulting to staring into the middle distance of a soccer pitch or checking social media on my phone.

Kids sports should be a whole chapter in WTEWYE. We only do rec soccer. Those parents who do competition sports are a whole other breed. I am in awe. My sister’s son does competitive baseball, bless her heart.

I've coached the Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams at my school on and off over the past 20 years, coached at the Canada Summer Games, and I played rugby at university. Competitive team sports are super fun and there are lots of life lessons to learn from them, but also quite a time (and financial) commitment. I was happy when my son and daughter both got the hint and opted for more recreational sports that we could do together as a family (X-Country skiing, Trail Running, Canoeing) as they've hit their early teens.
