Fitness!

I signed up for a gym. I have tried to stay on track finishing out my current running plan, but it’s getting not just too hot here but way too humid. My running is suffering from it. So, I’m gonna start doing it on a treadmill. I still love running outside and will opt for that if the weather is okay, but a lot of my half marathon training will be on a treadmill, unfortunately. Or at least the first half of the training will be. I have never really run the way I run outside on a treadmill, only walked fast. So, this will be…different.

sounds like you need to work on growing your feet
i wish i were a women's size 6. i cannot BELIEVE how many shoes don't come in my size. one of my favorite shoe brands makes 10% of their shoes in size 5. the rest are size 6+ and too big. but, mysteriously, if it's a sneaker or boot i'm size 6.5... anyone else have that problem?

AND they never make men's shoes in small enough sizes. BUT i'm reading in all the reviews that the structure 25s run very small, so i might order men's 6.

deciding between these: in breaking my white shoe rule but only cause i think these rule.

Our summer officially started this week. The kids are going to the Y’s summer camp so I have no excuse not to go to the gym since I am there 2 times a week. We’re slowly building our workout routine.
Monday-weights
Tuesday-yoga
Wednesday-cardio class
Thursday-weights and possibly the 30 minute core class
Friday-we are still working this out but are leaning toward general weight training since there aren’t any great options for classes, we may try a yoga class at a different Y.

Weekend means a skate session, and either park or swimming with the kids and recovery.

Ran the Raven 50mile Ultra and relay yesterday here in The Yukon. My half was 24m (38km) w/ ~6000 ft (1850m) of elevation gain. Views were spectacular (check the pics) and the volunteers were fantastic.

Not awesome? Stepping in a gopher hole in the alpine, and injuring my hip flexor and spraining my ankle, and limping the last 14km to the checkpoint. Injuries happen, and I still made the time cutoff, but it was pretty disappointing to not make my time goal and also humbling to have 2/3 of the field pass you and ask if they could help.

Dr said 3 weeks off and physio and I should be good as new, so hopefully I don’t regress too much. IMG_8492.jpegIMG_8489.jpegIMG_8479.jpeg

I think I am finally getting annoyed with Fitbit and their constant updates making the service worse along with poor exercise tracking.

I went on a run this morning and every day this week. Track the exercise via the app and then it doesn’t log the mile splits. I did not run a 6’ mile. It just logs that first one.

Does anyone use another smart watch they like besides Fitbit? I’ve heard good things about Garmin but am open to others.

Unfortunately I'm using a Pixel Watch 2 which uses Fitbit. I've never had any real problems besides a occasional nigh where it doesn't record my sleep.

I'd definitely avoid a Galaxy Watch. That's what I had before I got the Pixel watch and the heartbeat sensor would just start to crap out during exercise so it showed I only burned like 100 calories after 20 minutes on a bike.

I've had a great experience with my Apple Watch. I'm by no means a fanboy, but their ecosystem does integrate super well and the functionality was leaps and bounds above what Fitbit was offering. Looks like Amazon has a decent sale on the SE at the moment.

I started out with a very basic Fitbit model but moved on after about a year. I've been using the Apple Watch for almost 5 years now and I love it.
Might upgrade to the 10 or maybe even splurge on the Ultra. In the smart device world, Apple is all I know so there really is no need for me to try anything else. I go many years before I upgrade.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 265 my wife and kids got me for Father’s Day this year. (To replace a previous Garmin watch thats battery was starting to not hold after 4 years.) So far I really like it.

What functionality do you want from your watch and what’s your price point?

I like it most for activity tracking, heart rate, and sleep tracking. I don't care about many of the other features available. If it needs to be manually added to the Fitbit app I'm not going to do it. Fitbit is terrible at activity tracking and sometimes sleep tracking. Some days I sleep fine and it says I had horrible sleep and vice versa. Don't care about messaging/notifications, being able to pay from a watch and things like that.

That Garmin watch is pricer than I'd like, but I'd be willing to pay more for the right one. So I'd say my budget is like $200-$300. I am currently sporting a Fitbit Charge 5 which is okay. I've gotten used to a lot of features I don't like about it but I think this is my last FitBit.

I am a bit biased on this but I've had Garmin devices for awhile and really like them. I've tried fitbits too and always ended up disappointed.

From that angle, if you are more focused on general health tracking, check out the Garmin Vivoactive 5. If you are doing more activity tracking, check out the Garmin Forerunner 165. Both should be in your price range. The Forerunner also has a music version you can use with Bluetooth headphones and without a phone.

I'll add that I've liked my Garmin Forerunners over the last 3ish years. I mainly use them for GPS tracking of runs, but the heart rate, stress, and sleep tracking stuff is nice too.

I'll also add that having a record of my pulse and being able to see it whenever I want is something that I've really liked. Back in 2018 I got a virus that caused pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane around my heart, leading to liquid build up around it), which led to two hospitalizations and left me so weak I went from running 20 miles a week to being unable to walk a block. During the month that the inflammation stuck around, my resting pulse was around 50% higher than normal, so sitting or laying and being able to look at my pulse drop down to the normal rate is always something I appreciate now, since it's a kind of weird thing where knowing my heart "betrayed" me once, I kind of always worry it could happen again.

After a couple of years using my Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones, I splurged and picked up the updated OpenRun Pro 2s. The improvement in sound quality is pretty huge, with the fit and everything staying about the same. For anyone that wants music or audiobooks while still being able to hear your surroundings, I recommend them.

Anyone here use insole inserts in their running shoes?

I ran in an older pair of Saucony shoes this week and they gave me pain in the ball of my foot. I hadn’t worn them in a couple of months and that hadn’t happened with them before. In comparison, my current rotation of New Balance and Hokas aren’t super comfy and wish they had a tad more cushion. I also blocked plenty of running shoe ads on Instagram and now it seems I’m getting nothing but insoles, so it has me thinking if they work/are worth it.

I hurt my foot pretty bad a couple years ago, had to do physical therapy and such. I never tried insoles, but it was the point I switched from whatever inexpensive running shoes I could find in my size (14 wide) to using Hoka Bondi 8s, which at least compared to what I was using before are super padded. It's also when I started tracking mileage on my shoes and retiring them at 400 miles.
