Fresh Grabs

Enjoy spinning it Joe! 🕺

I’m keen to hear your thoughts on the album! I’m actually going to listen to it now and see what I think! ☺

I've heard it already...

I got impatient on Friday night and streamed the hi res audio feed of it lol!

I really like it, they've made a huge leap in terms of variety and quality of songwriting on this one for me!

This June marked the most records I have ever added to my collection in a single month, as some of these were ordered in May but were delayed in USPS hell for weeks. Gonna be a lot here, so bear with me.
Here we go:

June Acquisitions

Ambient pickups:
Julia Holter - Tragedy
Slow Dancing Society - The Disappearing Collective Vol. I

20200630_235520.jpg

Julia's Tragedy is her debut album, and one that separates from her other five with it being a truly ambient release. This also marks me completing her full length releases on vinyl, and I am very excited about it (all that's left is to just get three of them signed by her!).
Drew Sullivan released this SDS album this (with a few others), and it is perhaps my second favorite out of the many I have listened to (and boy does he have a lengthy discography). It gives off a tragic and pained feeling, and yet is very beautiful.

Jazz pickups:
Hank Mobley - Poppin'
Lee Morgan - Cornbread
Stanley Turrentine - Comin' Your Way
Eric Dolphy - Out There
Jeff Parker & the New Breed - Suite For Max Brown
Shabaka and the Ancestors - We are Sent Here by History

20200701_000245.jpg

All of these lovely BN Tone Poet reissues require no introduction; they're all fantastic.
Eric Dolphy was found at an indie store in Spokane, WA, and it was a sealed Newbury edition (didn't know they sold to indie record stores). Despite the dreaded Rainbo source, I'm surprised by the decent audio playback.
I was worried I was too late in owning the new Jeff Parker record (one of my current top 10) after seeing it sold out in many outlets (except for the premium import on Bandcamp). I eventually came across the lone copy at Seasick Records in Alabama while hunting it down online and although it set me back perhaps more than I would've liked, I got 'er done.
Shabaka was nice to see on the Target sale, and thanks to @MikeH's cancellation trick that I now have in my back pocket should Target have another one of these sales, I nabbed this for $16!

Current year pickups:
Nicole Atkins - Italian Ice
Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher
Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated Side B [signed insert]
Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind
20200701_000815.jpg

Both Nicole's and Phoebe's fresh drops were bundled with the Jeff Parker LP from above from Seasick to get free shipping. Both of them are their respective red variant. In particular, Phoebe's album is likely to be a high ranking entry on my year end list.
I guess I gave into FOMO with CRJ's newest...I didn't read that the early bird copies from her webstore would come with a signed insert, instead of a signed cover. Thankfully the insert is a replica of the album cover, so I have it placed in front of the jacket in an outer sleeve to help me forget!
It took a month, but Heaven to a Tortured Mind has clicked. Epic and surreal. Also a Target grab for < $15 on the neat silver variant. Couldn't be more ecstatic!

N&G RotM pickups:
Mark de Clive-Lowe - Heritage
Tortoise - TNT

Much love to both @Skalap and @sjaygray, these are both fantastic additions to the N&G catalog.

Analogue Productions pickups:
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
Norah Jones - Feels Like Home
Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing

20200701_001501.jpg

The jazz records on the top row are obvious classics, Norah Jones' follow up to the brilliant and stunning Come Away WIth Me is an underrated 2000's singer/songwriter gem, but the real treasure of this group for me is this 2xLP 45RPM AP reissue of Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing. I didn't realize how many songs I recognized when I was young, but I was brought back in time by uncovering my mom's CD of this in my closet. I ordered this with a 15% discount from Acoustic Sounds (along with a gift for someone else) on a rather pricey whim. Worth it, and then some. I would struggle in whittling down selections to make a top 10 list of best sounding records in my library, but Surfacing would be in there. It is flooring.

Black Lives Matter pickups:
Black Milk - Fever
Shafiq Husayn - The Loop
JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs
Little Simz - Grey Area
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton

20200701_002416.jpg

I remember trying out Black Milk's album from '18 and enjoying it, but wasn't into vinyl at the time. I forgot about the album until this year when I saw it in the discount bin for ~$16 sealed at a local. Nice to see it is on 2xLP 45RPM red vinyl, too!
Shafiq Husayn is a hip-hop artist and producer, and I would not have found out about this with MikeH's comments on Bandcamp day. Massive 16 track 2xLP on clear vinyl that features collaboration from the likes of Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Bilal, and Haitus Coyote to name a few. Soulful and yet hard-hitting.
The bottom row was all acquired the Amazon B2G1 sale. I found it hilarious that the JPEGMAFIA record (which I listened to for the first time this year) included a download code, yet it's readily available for free on Bandcamp 🤣. Little Simz was a favorite from last year, and Straight Outta Compton couldn't be more apropos for the current climate.

Foreign pickups:
Nujabes - Modal Soul
Tokyo Nights (Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988)

Isabelle Antena - Hoping For Love
Mamman Sani - Tarritt

20200701_002947.jpg

If there's one single record among all of the photos that I am beaming with joy about, it's easily Modal Soul. One of my few grails. I was hesitant to give in to the $50+ seen everywhere. But...it was in the Target sale, I kid you not. I did a triple take, and quickly scanned the available listing to find two other items to use with the cancellation trick (took 10 minutes or so). I was able to find two, rushed to check out and immediately cancelled those two. In the end, I still cannot believe that I was able to get a shipped copy of Modal Soul for $34. I'm still stunned thinking about it. Didn't expect a tip-on jacket, so even better.
Got the J-pop compilation as an Amazon cheapie, and it is a great sounding press. Now I just need Pacific Breeze 2...
Found out about this Isabelle Antena record from Musique Plastique. It's a hybrid of bossa-nova, jazz, and french pop from the late 80's. Really an eclectic sound and pairs nicely with the night hours. So glad to be introduced to this. Thanks as always, MP ❤
Tarritt was a Bandcamp purchase, and it is Nigerian electronic/new age with a very spacey feel. It was also available at MP, but their copies sold out. Liking this one as kind of a static, yet pleasant intermission when unsure of what to play next.

Miscellaneous pickups:
Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
Madonna - Confessions on a Dance Floor
The Postal Service - Give Up
Sweet Trip - Velocity: Design: Comfort
20200701_003334.jpg

Was late to the Chapterhouse party, but I did come across a somewhat pricey copy at my local and bought it on a whim, thinking that they were sold out everywhere. Seems that standard black MOV copies are on Juno, but the blue-colored ones are long gone. Glad to have the blue!
Also worried about being OOP, I was relieved to see a restock of my favorite Madonna record on eBay, and for a reasonable price with random coupon offer. The 2xLP sounds great, but it will take time for me to get used to the lack of transitions.
Filled a hole with Give Up, a necessary record from my youth.
After over a month's delay from SoundOfVinyl, I finally have the shoegaze/IDM/glitch-pop masterpiece that is Sweet Trip's second album. Such a daring and unique fusion of analog and digital elements coalescing into something jarring yet bizarrely entrancing. What an excellent press from Gotta Groove Records.

Lastly, I needed a restock of inners. Glad to have been alerted about these from @hype about being in the Target B2G1 sale; thanks again!

A bit more from the Target sale.

The Dylan ended up having a deep box cutter looking cut across most of the top I didn't notice until I took the plastic off along with 3-4 creases that went through the entire box set. I already got a refund for 2 other things from this sale which were much worse so not sure if i'm even going to take action on this one.

I thought Target stepped there packing game up but i'm not having any better luck with this sale. Anyone else have multiple things damaged from this last sale?
