Fresh Grabs

Obvs a stock photo, but I ordered one of these about a week ago, it showed up today. Pretty much plug-and-play. I've only had time tonight to clean and spin a few albums, but this thing is killing it. Not cheap, but literally as easy as making toast and 100 dBs less than the homebrew ultrasonic I threw together a few weeks ago. I used a bunch of CC points to defray the cost a bit, too.

2020 Rocktober 2XLP mastered by Chris Bellman. I have had this album in various incarnations since the day of release. This is the best-sounding one, no doubt. No gatefold, which is a shame, but the grooves hold the power. Punch, depth, detailed-highs without shrillness, moments of holography... I hope they release this master as a non-limited pressing sooner than later, because this is how this album is supposed to sound.

What brand is that cleaner?

Degritter.

No affiliation. This thing cost nearly as much as my (used) car, so I don't want anyone to think I'm selling anything here. I weighed my time, options and opportunities and decided to go for it. YMMV. I used a SpinClean and then the homebrew ultrasonic tank and motorized record spit amalgamation mentioned above prior to this purchase. Also, I have no children.

Oh man, that thing looks awesome. I kinda want one now.

I'd love any further view on the sound quality of the Hi Tide. I held off...but just barely :). Thanks!

I am curious too my local had several in stock this past weekend.
Fellas, the first spin sounded great to me — definitely nothing offensive jumped out — but since I had it on in background I’ll give it a more critical listen today and report back. (Song selection is A+, I’ll say that.)

Damn $3k....I see why you added the part about having no children 😂😂😂

Man...this thing looks dope. I have a VPI but have always been interested in getting one of the ultrasonic cleaners one day...the VPI was a great investment for me.

I'm jealous! Looking forward to your review of this!

I hadn't really thought of giving it a proper "review," but maybe that's not a bad idea once I've lived with it for a while. I've already made some slight adjustments just through the first ten or so cleans, and have a short mental list of things to do next time I switch out the water, but honestly this thing is super-intuitive and cleans well right out of the box. You basically just pick your cleaning and drying settings, pop in the record, hit the start button and walk away for a few minutes. I can tell you that it took the noise level on a poorly-pressed album that I've cleaned manually, with the Spin Clean, and then twice with the other ultrasonic down about 80%. That may not sound like perfection, but it's the difference between wincing through a spin and sitting back and just enjoying the music. I'm hoping that with a few more refinements (water type and surfactant) and heavy cleans the remaining noise will be even lower. Trying to keep my expectations reasonable, however!

Blah, blah, blah. I'll keep you guys posted somehow!

@HuddieLedbetter @TenderLovingKiller®

After a more critical listen today, a few comments about Hi Tide Groove.

The usual caveat for comps containing songs with varying recording quality applies.

As far as the pressing goes, my Disc 1 has a baby warp but nothing I can’t live with. Both records have a medium-ish noise floor that I didn’t pick up on at first listen, only noticeable during song gaps. Typical of a Fat Possum pressing. Still sounds great loud.

Neither issue is significant enough to second guess my buy — still glad to have it in the collection and would buy again without hesitation. If you’re looking for dead-quiet, buyer beware.

Avohou Pierre et L'Orchestre Black Santiago

Superfly delivers, as usual. Three of the rarest singles from Poly-Rythmo, all fabulous; plus a great, difficult-to-find album from my second favourite band from Benin.
