Young Knives - Barbarians

The release of this album was one of the unexpected joys of lockdown. Young Knives popped into my head after reading that article about landfill indie. Turns out they’ve embraced their inner weird, starting wearing tie dye and grown their hair out. They’ve also become self sufficient, with their own studio, t shirt press and the like.

Don’t know if you can still do it, but I signed up to a virtual release party for the album, where you got an email a day with a link to an MP3 of a track, and a video from the band discussing the track and linking to musical and other inspirations. The shirt and the certificate was a special edition for getting through all the emails. If you want to get an album for free and have a laugh it’s worth your time.

Gabor Szabo - Dreams (Modern Harmonic, 2020 VMP Classics Pressing)
John Lee Hooker - It Serve You Right To Suffer (Impulse!, 2020 VMP Classics Pressing)
Kellee Patterson - Maiden Voyage (Black Jazz, 2020 VMP Exclusive Pressing)
Tony Allen - The Source (Blue Note, 2017 First Pressing)
Neil Swainson Quintet - 49th Parallel (Reel to Real, 2020 Limited RSD First Pressing)
Black Sabbath - Technical Ecstasy (Vertigo, 1976 First Pressing)
Paul Quinichette - For Basie (Esquire/Prestige, 1959 First Mono Pressing)

This is a stack which has come in over this week. The Szabo is fantastic and such a good release, and of course its great to finally have the John Lee Hooker Classics. Tony Allen passed away earlier in the year and this 2lp set popped up cheap so I swooped in. Reel to Real is a fantastic level which issues previously un-released live jazz sessions (Zev Feldman plays a big part in the finding and releasing these), and this Neil Swainson Quintet is one which really intrigues me! The Black Sabbath was a killer charity shop find (cost 99p) and the Paul Quinichette was an unexpected ebay win.

George Braith ‎– Extension (Blue Note, 1967 First Mono Pressing)

Forgot to add this to the pile above, so I just took a photo of it on the table. I really like Braiths playing although I do think the playing of 2 instruments at the same time is a bit gimmicky. Still, this album is fantastic and Grant Green is a great addition.

The Moore-McColl Jazz Society - Electric Fantastic (Moore, McColl, 2020 First Pressing)

This was a fantastic treat from a great jazz group in America. I have had a vinyl based instagram account for a while now and stumbled across the group that way. After a while I noticed they would comment and like a lot of my posts and the other week they messaged to ask if I would like a free copy of their latest record. When it turned up today they had also thrown in a t-shirt!! I'm really looking forward to spinning this later, the lead track is fantastic (pun intended) and I'm hoping the rest follows suit.

So a combination of preorders, recent sales, and a couple of recent buys all came in at the same time during a 2-day window this week and...it’s a lot. A little overwhelming to see how much I’ve actually bought this summer. Even though I’m still within my expanded vinyl budget this year (thanks to covid nixing a bunch of fun stuff & travel plans that I’d budgeted for this summer and in early 2021), it’s still eye opening when you receive ~30 records within a couple of days.

Probably gonna chill out for the rest of the year except for a couple records I’m looking to grab during both remaining RSDs. Still have a bunch of preorders already paid for scattered through the end of the year, too.

Daptone stoop sale order finally arrived. Picked up the later-era Sharon Jones LPs that I was missing, and most of Charles Bradley’s LPs.

Coltrane Acoustic Sounds Series came in. Haven’t spun either of these yet, but the packaging and quality is A1 on these. Glad to finally have ALS on vinyl.

A couple of VMP preorders came in along with the 2 ROTMs. The Al Green is an upgrade for a horribly beat up thrift store copy I’ve had for 15 years.

derapwinkel finally came through with this summer’s preorders. Shipped really well with plastic corner protectors and everything. That Antililly is my favorite.

Haul from Target’s 3 for 2 sale. Everything here except The Weeknd ended up less than $15 each. Also filled up on some preorders that ended up way cheaper than anywhere else.

Unwound - 6/30/99: Reykjavik, Iceland

beyond excited to get this. Numero recently released a small amount of these on Bandcamp. Previously it was the bonus LP for the No Energy box set. These were leftovers so they made some covers and added them. I’d been considering dropping $90 for the box on discogs just to have this live set on vinyl. I saw the post 25 minutes after they posted it and it had sold out. Someone mentioned one or two kept popping back up as available so I refreshed for about 30 minutes and almost gave up hope. Suddenly 13 more popped up and I scrambled to get one. I accidentally bought two in a frenzy and was hoping to have an extra for someone here but I got an email that they oversold and I was the last order and they only had one for me.
