Fresh Grabs

Work trip got cut short because my coworker was selfish and didn’t tell anyone he was sick before traveling. Now he’s stuck out in Boise and I’m awaiting test results at home. Happy to have these waiting for me.

NOFX - The Decline: Live at Red Rocks
Action Bronson - Only for Dolphins
Frankie and the Witch Fingers - Sidewalk
Undeath - Lesions of a Different Kind

and some random amazon preorders:

D63DCBB9-5DB0-4D15-AB5C-30DB3B5F9996.jpegPeter Gabriel - Live in Athens 1987
Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek

Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

October RSD grabs. Struck out on UFO - Live in Youngstown 1978 but was happy (and lucky) to land these after a lot of hustling online. Koyaanisqatsi was an expensive record but it is truly stunning -- a fantastic pressing and even better music.

Mingus Ah Um is one of my all-time favorite jazz records. The MoFi One Step and other audiophile releases are out of my budget so this pressing was a target. Extremely thrilled with it -- especially for the price -- and love the bonus LP.

Harald Grosskopf - Synthesist
Krononaut - Krononaut

IMG_5538.JPG

Grosskopf may be better known as the drummer for Manuel Göttsching's Krautrock project Ashra but Grosskopf's solo album Synthesist, released in 1980 around the time he joined Ashra, is an electronic Berlin school classic. The album is worth it alone for its BANGER opening track "So Weit, So Gut."

Krononaut are a new London-based experimental jazz band that I've posted about before on the Jazz thread. They're not part of that hype Brit jazz scene so don't expect a Sons of Kemet/Ezra Collective/Nubya Garcia/The Comet is Coming/etc.-spiced record. It is firmly experimental jazz. There's something about the rhythms and instrumentation that bit me hard and I keep going back to it. Another one of my favorite jazz releases of 2020.

Faith No More - The Real Thing (Rocktober)
Yawning Man - Live at Giant Rock

This pressing of The Real Thing is as terrible as what you've heard -- hot flaming garbage. Such a disappointment, especially from Rhino. I'm trying to get my money back.

Early in the pandemic in May, Yawning Man headed out to Giant Rock in the Mojave Desert, fired up some massive generators, and played a socially-distanced concert to no one a la Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii. A DVD of the show is available too -- and that may be the better way to experience it -- but either way I was happy to support the band and get this awesome record.

Oh dang! I hadn't heard about the issues with the Faith No More. Perhaps i should stop trying to track one down.

5 LP Craft Box set. I was gunna claim the 2 LP version in the PIF thread this week but after I let GAP take it I decided to have another look around town for this one, for some reason the 2LP is no where to be found but Amazon had one of these left for a good price. Unnecessary but I gotta say, it sounds VERY VERY good. AntiStatic inners, the box is cheap but the pressing seems to be VERY good so far.

Warped, punched off-center, noisy...my needle looks like it’s riding a wild bull. Some buyers on Discogs ended up with copies they’re happy with so not suggesting you end your search. But if you buy, make sure they have a good return policy or buy used and validate it doesn’t have any problems. I’m glad I kept my MOV copy!

Are those 2LP Zeppelin reissues good? I only have IV as a used copy from my parents and it’s not in good shape. So I’ve been planning to buy new. Should I aim for this 2LP reissue?

This is a tough question that would probably change quite a few times if you talked to different people but honestly just as a straight forward answer I love the remasters and would absolutely recommend them. The few older releases i've read that some consider "better" go for QUITE a bit if you want them in great condition (which will be the only way they probably beat these remasters imo) so it's more about how much are you wanting to spend and is it worth the time, effort and money to do it? For me it wasn't.

I now have the deluxe or super deluxe of all there studio albums and the remastered BBC Sessions Boxset (except for there debut which I have various originals but will be getting it eventually as this one also has the a full live show as the bonus discs). I have no real issues with any of them personally and a lot like the Pink Floyd reissues when taking in account price they're the easy winners for most including myself.

Also, the extra content on these deluxe 2-3 lp editions might not be worth it as most go in the $25-40+ range. You can get the standard 1lp reissues under $20 fairly easily if you wait for sales. I'm a huge fan so I love the extras and think there are several versions that get close or even beat the album versions so they're nice to have and play every 3rd or 4th spin of the album.

Thanks for the feedback! I have most of the Pink Floyd remasters and am very satisfied with those. So if the Zeppelin reissues are on par... I’m sold.

No problem! I'd say the Pink Floyd reissues are a bit better done overall for sure but you'll def. be happy with the Zep reissues as well! If you really want to dig deep on the smaller differences you can head over to the stevehoffman forums and there's endless convo's on them.
