Yeah last time I bought a first time on vinyl Idlewild record last year it was an option. This year it was just what it is! I’m proper down with it. Less single use plastic is always better!

I think the big problem is in store rather than this. The labels store is a relatively small seller and they don’t need to advertise with the product. They can just put it in the paper bag straight at the factory for their copies. It’s a nice step but a small one. Maybe if all online stores did it. I think it’d be hard for a shop because it makes digging pretty difficult and they can’t use their shiny products to sell them. I suppose we just have to think harder maybe…

Somebody's Knocking arrived last week but I still need to clean it (this weekend). I picked up Straight Songs last year and love that album, very stripped down and sparse.
I had a bit of a binge at Honest Jon's. I still want more. Reasonably priced records, some really interesting music, for the most part pressed at Pallas. And only two titles came in shrink wrap.

Huge haul of bits over the past week or so. I will start with the big ones!
The New Jazz Orchestra – Le Déjeuner Sur L'Herbe (Verve Records, 1969 First Stereo Pressing)
A huge score that I have been working on back and forth for a while now. The group was incredibly important for British jazz and included the creme of the crop, such as Ian Carr, Harry Beckett, Henry Lowther, Michael Gibbs, Barbara Thompson, Jon Hiseman, Neil Ardley, etc. Mike Taylor also contributed a couple of tracks (as did Michael Garrick). Such incredible music.
Norma Winstone – Edge Of Time (Argo, 1972 First Pressing)
Norma Winstone's debut as lead. It's an incredible avant-garde album that once again features some of the greatest British jazz musicians of the era (Mike Osborne, John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Henry Lowther and Kenny Wheeler, etc). Another biggie that I was able to luck out on!
Joe Harriott Quintet – Free Form (Jazzland, 1961 First US Promo Pressing)
Continuing on with the free-jazz theme is this belter from Joe Harriott. This is often cited as being THE album that defined British free-jazz and I was able to get this promo white label pressing for a steal.
The Jazz Couriers Featuring Tubby Hayes And Ronnie Scott – The Jazz Couriers (Tempo, 1958 First 7" Pressing)
I have been hunting down a few Tempo 7" releases lately as in most cases they never made it on a full album. I passed up on an extremely expensive copy of this a couple of years ago and am glad I waited as I was able to get this at a killer price! Its in pretty decent shape, the disc itself is super clean and with the triangle inner.

A great haul of 'recent' releases! Muriel Grossmann continues to release stunning albums, with these 2 being fantastic! I haven't heard the full album yet but the Graham Collier looks to be fantastic, with Harry Beckett featuring on trumpet! I had a look around the record shops in central London for the first time in forever (might have been the first time since COVID!) and came away with the 2 Nat Birchall's which have been out of print and tricky to find for a while now!
The Dudley Moore Trio - The Dudley Moore Trio (Decca, 1969 First Stereo Pressing)
Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Duke Ellington's Liberian Suite (Philips, 1953 First UK 10" Pressing)
I have to admit to being shocked when I saw this Dudley Moore record when searching through the racks in a shop in Nottingham last weeked. I didn't realise that Moore had any connection to jazz (he was quite a famous actor and comedian) and for a couple of quid I thought it was worth picking this out. At the same time I found this really cool looking Ellington 10" which also looks great!

Whilst in central London I popped into Ray's Jazz in Foyles and while there weren't any records that took my fancy, the Jazz Couriers Discography and Newport programme was a steal at just £2.50 each! I was also able to get this Downbeat yearbook on eBay for cheap and I spent quite a while digging into it the other day, it's a fantastic timemachine!
