Fresh Grabs

Sisonke Xonti - uGaba The Migration
Pedro Lima - Maguidala
Getatchew Mekuria

When I went into this little, almost poky record shop in Vilnius this week on a work trip to Lithuania, I really didn't expect to find three amazing African records. The Xonti is jazz worth checking out. I particularly dig the trumpeter. And two reissues from Sao Tomé and Principe (recently said I only had one album from there, well it's 2 now), and Ethiopia. Perhaps most remarkable of all they had an OG from Cabo Verde, just not my favourite by Bana. Discotag is the shop if anybody ever ends up there (great city, by the way).

January Fresh Grabs
FD8F6B37-598C-4EFE-95B9-8E2B16748289.gif
January was a much smaller haul than the craziness of December (I am still trying to get caught up). Still some excellent additions to my collection overall.

The Meters - Rejuvenation
3rd Bass - The Cactus Album
Ol’ Dirty Bastard - Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version
F.S. Blumm & Nils Frahm - 2X1=4
Eels - Beautiful Freak
Jason Collett - Here's To Being Here
Iceage - New Brigade
Thee Oh Sees - Mutilator Defeated at Last
Aeon Station - Observatory
Rosali - No Medium
T
he Replacements - The Complete Inconcerated Live
Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band - The Legendary 1979 No Nukes
The Who - Who's Next
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - The Live Anthology

Some of the ones I’m most excited for are of course the Tom Petty Live Anthology which is phenomenal. The 3rd Bass is an OG pressing with original hype stickers. The Replacements was a RSD release I passed on at the time and kinda regretted but my local got a barely used copy in and I scooped that right up. Rosali was one of my favorite albums of 2021 and if I’d spent more time with it over the past year it may have been my favorite. Also happy to come across Iceage debut LP too as it’s becoming a bit harder to come by. All in all a pretty good (and measured) month.

The Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet - Change Is (Columbia, 1969 First Pressing)
Graham Collier Sextet - Down Another Road (Fontana, 1969 First Pressing)
Guy Warren Of Ghana - The African Soundz Of Guy Warren Of Ghana (Regal Zonophone/Fiesta, 1972 First US Pressing)
The Trio - Conflagration (Dawn, 1971 First Pressing)

Yesterday was one hell of an experience. I had a message to say that there was an affordable (pricey but way under average) copy of the Don Rendell/Ian Carr and Graham Collier for sale here in London. I called the seller and made an offer for the 2 and was told as long as I picked them up today the deal is good. So I rushed from one side of London to the other and back again, but it was definitely worth it! Both are in fantastic shape, the records look unplayed, but "Change Is" does have 2 small holes in the sleeve. It has a stamp on the rear to show that it was from the BBC Grammaphone Library, an archive of over 1.6 million records, most of which were not played but stored for posterity. Cant quite believe I have these, still shellshocked! While I was there the seller said that they also had the Guy Warren and he offered it up for another great price. Finally, a super clean copy of The Trio's album, featuring the creme of British jazz including Mike Osbourne, Harry Beckett, John Surman, Alan Skidmore, Kenny Wheeler....

Dave Gold Big Band - Heaven On Their Minds (My Only Desire, 2017 Limited First Pressing)
Michael Garrick Quartet - Silhouette (Gearbox Records, 2010 Limited First Mono Pressing)
Jazz Kissa 2014 Vol.2 by Katsumasa Kusonose (Self Published, 2022)

I shared the Dave Gold link on the Jazz thread the other day, it was on offer for just £5 (£9.50 inc postage) which is a hell of a good deal. The Michael Garrick is an "unearthed" live recording with his first group, recorded in 1958. Finally, the second volume of the fantastic Jazz Kissa photobook which I ordered less than a week ago from Japan with it arriving this morning!!

A few picks from an ice cream shop near my mom’s house called Scooped.

The mono Dylan was my sleeve, got the bare LPs as a quality upgrade. (Anyone need a VG- set?) Emitt was a dollar bin find. The DSOTM MoFi wasn’t cheap, but it was below what I see them sell for by a lot. Fair warning was also cheap, I wanted the dark VH album. 5725273D-C79B-40E5-9298-7BF541A0C6AD.jpeg8E203083-F1BA-4299-861A-62CFEE858CDD.jpeg1D7FA144-AA96-46C7-932F-46BB29343918.jpeg620CF336-45FD-442B-A5B2-4CA26CC2CFB4.jpeg

That Emitt is a great record, good find!

Took a drive to two record stores about 30 min away from me yesterday. First time to both shops and will definitely be heading back to both! Good jazz selections (lots of OJCs) and even had some VMP pressings all for below market value. The 2nd shop had a really solid jazz selection but also had a lot of RTI reissues and MOV pressings. Ran out of time in the 2nd shop since my wife was getting bored haha

Stairsteps
An extremely clean OG pressing. Really cool album on Buddah Records.

Moon Beams
This is an OJC that was pressed at RTI. Harder and harder to find these Evans OJCs lately! They also had a few other titles that I may go back to buy eventually...

The Soul Society
Japanese pressing. Hell of a lineup on this one--it's a fantastic record.

Miles Davis - Blue Haze
An 80s OJC

Sonny Red with Blue Mitchell and Grant Green
Another 80s OJC (was sealed)

John Hicks in Concert
Had to pick this up for $5. Pretty cool lineup on this one. Walter Booker on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums, Elise Wood on flute and special guest Bobby Hutcherson on the vibes

Feeling Free - Barney Kessel
yet another 80s OJC on contemporary

Eberhard Weber Colours - Little Movements
$5 ECM pressing. I have a few of their other albums and enjoy them.

Uncle Tupelo - March 16-20, 1992
RTI/Sony Legacy pressing sealed.

Claire Austin - When Your Lover Has Gone
This is a Contemporary/Vogue pressing. Don't really ever see those on this side of the pond!

My January grabs, starting with the discounted MOVs and BN Classic:

Out of this next batch, only the XTC was new. I’m very pleased with the sound quality of this reissue. I do wish the cover art was textured like the UK original, which means I’ll probably remain on the lookout for a copy, just not as ardently.

The Miles is a 70s reissue. I bought it to compare it to my late 80s DMM copy, and am happy to keep both for now. The Who is a 60s copy that has seen better days. And I finally completed my 70s studio McCartney set.
