Fresh Grabs

Hi, I'm an addict. My binge continues.

Hit up 5 stores today, 2 of which I haven't dug through since before the pandemic, and 1 which I've never been to. Nas & Doom were pre-orders that arrived in the mail this week. Madlib & Pete/CL were used mail arrivals too. Everything else I picked up in the used bins today other than the Elzhi and Jay-Z, which were new.

I cleaned out the soul, rap and world sections of stuff I want, so I should just need to check the new arrivals sections regularly at these places going forward. Only partially went through the jazz sections, and didn't even touch the rock/pop sections though. Did hit up a new store for the first time (opened 2 years ago) that's small and only sells used records and has awesome & weird stuff - found that Funk Inc there. Probably already my 2nd favorite shop in town. Contemplating hitting up my old regular from 15 years ago that I haven't been to in probably 10 years tomorrow. Or maybe I'll save that for next weekend.

Also, found 4 crates of records in the back of my storage room that I had grabbed from my mom's place 8 years ago and put there when I first moved into my current place. Before that, they were at my mom's for 6 years since I first moved out. So essentially untouched for 14 years. Mostly filled with the kind of crap I could afford at the time - super common or beat up records you'd find at thrift stores or dollar bins back then, and since I was digging for samples back then - sound library records, weird instructional records, kid's records, etc. I actually thought I'd donated most of this stuff years ago when I parsed down my collection and took a long (years-long) break from collecting. But there's actually some good stuff in there, and some albums slipped in there that I've been wondering where they were. Still can't find the copy of Physical Graffiti that I know I had though - that might have accidentally slipped into one of the crates that I did donate. Not technically fresh grabs, but here's a few that I grabbed on first flip through to clean.

Harry Beckett - Flare Up (Philips, 1970 First Pressing)
Michael Garrick - Troppo (Argo, 1974 First Pressing)
The Michael Garrick Sextet With Norma Winstone - The Heart Is A Lotus (Argo, 1970 First Pressing)

One hell of a British jazz haul this week. These 3 here were high up on my wantlist and I never expected to be in the position to tick them all off at once. The creme of British jazz. This copy of Harry Beckett's "Flare Up" is the best I am likely to ever see. Not only is the record itself near perfect but the sleeve is still in the shrink, with a slit at the side to get the record in/out. Michael Garrick's "Troppo" is one of his rarer albums and finding it at all is incredibly tricky nowadays as so few were pressed. Incredibly, deep in the sleeve was a handbill/programme of a 1976 performance by the group. Finally, another Garrick which I have missed out on many times over, "The Heart Is A Lotus". This is another interesting one as it has the 1960's label design whereas most of these use the "new" 1970's label. This indicates that this copy was from the very first batch to be pressed as they likely used the remainder of the 60's labels first.

The Joe Harriott Quintet - A Guy Called Joe (Columbia, 1961 First 7" Pressing)
The Jazz Committee Featuring Bert Courtley & Don Rendell - The Jazz Committee (Decca, 1959 First 7" Pressing)
Tubby Hayes - Voodoo Session (Trunk Records, 2009 First Limited 7" Pressing)

More British jazz! The Harriott and Jazz Committee's are especially tricky to find and amazingly the discs are both in fantastic condition. The Jazz Committee sleeve has seen better days but I'm just glad to have found a copy with the sleeve at all! The Tubby Hayes is an interesting one. Trunk Records released this EP, limited to just 666 copies, in 2009 then followed up with another run of 500 without the sleeve. It's taken from Hayes' musical contribution to the "Dr Terror's House Of Horror" film and has been demanding silly money since its release. I couldn't believe I was able to get this sealed copy from the first run for just £16.50, which might sound pricey for a 7" but was actually a hell of a great deal!

Ill Considered - Liminal Space (New Soil, 2022 First Pressing)
Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra - Tommy Dorsey - Frank Sinatra (Joker, 1981 Pressing)

Its always a great week when the latest Ill Considered release turns up! The Dorsey/Sinatra was used as a card stiffener for one of the other records but im certainly going to keep it.

Sonny Rollins Live At The Barbican, London, 1995 Poster.

I threw a best offer over to the seller for this poster which they accepted. Annoyingly though Royal Mail battered it on its way to me and its covered in creases. I sent the seller some photos and suggested he put a claim in against them and surprisingly he refunded me in full and said he would let me know of the outcome against them. Fingers crossed he gets a full reinbursement.
