Fresh Grabs

May was definitely a quality-over-quantity month! Belle & Sebastian preorder, Pumpkins nostalgia, dollar-bin Loretta Lynn, and a cheap James Brown.

I love the new B&S but I’m a biased observer. The Pumpkins reissue sounds simply superb.
But my best grab of the month, courtesy of People’s Records in Detroit, an OG pressing for a whopping $1.00:

As is usually the case with these classic BN pressings, the vinyl plays a lot better than it looks. No skips, and frankly not a lot of noise. The cashier told me “I hope this plays, because it’s a killer record.” It does, and it is!
 
I've never read this magazine from Third Man Records before but learned recently the issue they put out last spring has features on Sun Ra AND Blue Öyster Cult! So naturally I needed to get one - glad they still had copies available direct.

Picked up a sealed copy of Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear on eBay.

Nice to be the first to touch it with a needle after 44 years. Plays perfect. Auto-cuing threw me off and I listened to side 4 after side 1.

Jacket cut out, which isn't a big deal. But...numpty of a seller shipped it in a New Balance box with no other protection. So a bit of creasing/bending on the upper and lower corners. Honestly, though, the records are so pristine I'm not sweating it too much.

Snagged some hip hop albums I've had on CD forever as well as a sealed 1978 OG Funkadelic. Came with the 7" which has maggot brain on it. That 7" absolutely smokes any of the recent Westbound reissues of that song. I have never come across a clean version of Maggot Brain LP, but it was cool to at least get the single.

That Funkadelic is a sweet grab! I've got an old copy that sounds great but I'd jump at a sealed copy

Yeah it is. I added it the Withers to make the shipping worthwhile so I didn’t have to wait for the other withers to go with it. I’ll just have to find something else to add to it!

With the HG still down I actually have a huge backlogue of some wonderful records to clean before I can spin so I’m a bit like a kid at Christmas! Should have the HG back and running tomorrow if the new boards sort it. The didn’t send me out a new gear and the old one is in a box in the office to ship back to them so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow 🙄

I just got back from the UK last night and I have 20+ records I purchased there in the cleaning queue right now. Making a big dent today while I get back up to speed with work!
