Fresh Grabs

I was away last weekend and will be again this weekend so I decided to share a few weeks worth of finds today.

Alan Skidmore Quartet - Tribute To 'Trane (Miles Music, 1988 First Signed Pressing)
Arman Ratip Trio - Introducing The Arman Ratip Trio (Columbia, 1970 First Pressing)
The Jazz Couriers - The Last Word (Tempo Records, 1959 First Pressing)
Jimmy Deuchar Ensemble - S/T (Tempo Records, 1955 First 10" Pressing)
Radio Leicester Big Band - The Third Album (RLBB, 1985 First Pressing)
The Ronnie Scott Orchestra And Tony Crombie - At The Royal Festival Hall (Decca, 1956 First 10" Pressing)

Some British Jazz goodies! The Alan Skidmore is a tribute album for Coltrane that was given a chunky write-up in Ian Carr's book of British jazz and I was able to get this copy cheap, and turns out its signed! The big ones here are the Arman Ratip, Jazz Couriers, and Jimmy Deuchar - 3 incredible albums that are really quite rare and typically expensive when they do pop up for sale. I havent even seen the Arman Ratip or Jimmy Deuchar in the flesh until now. The Jazz Couriers is one that im forutunate enough to have a test pressing of already, but without the sleeve, so its nice to have completed the set. The Radio Leicester Big Band caught my eye for the inclusion of the trumpeter Henry Lowther, a fantastic British jazz musician. Finally, a cheap find of Ronnie Scott and Tony Crombie at the Royal Festival Hall.

Allan Ganley Quartet Featuring Art Ellefson - The High Priest (Saga, 1958 First 7" Pressing)
Don Rendell & Jimmy Deuchar - Music In The Making (Vogue, 1955 First 7" Pressing)
The Tommy Whittle Quintet - A Touch Of Latin (Saga, 1958 First 7" Pressing)
The Ken Moule Seven - Arranged Ken Moule (Decca, 1955 First 7" Pressing)
Arnold Ross Sextet - S/T (Esquire, 1952 First 7" Pressing)
Ronnie Scott Orchestra Featuring The Drums Of Victor Feldman & Phil Seamen - S/T (Esquire 1955 First 7" Pressing)
The Kirchin Band: Basil & Ivor - Meet The Kirchins (Decca, 1955 First 7" Pressing)
Tony Crombie And His Orchestra - Jazz (Decca, 1955 First 7" Pressing)
Small Change: A Life of Tom Waits by Patrick Humpheries (St Martins Press, 1990)
Jazz From London, Odean Theatre, 1955 - Programme & Ticket Stub.

I had the opportunity to buy this stack of British jazz 7" releases at a great price as the sleeves have seen better days (the majority were taped along the edges for protection....which actually causes damage!). Im going to have a LOT of fun listening to these! I picked up the Tom Waits bio at a carboot for 50p, and the Odean Theatre jazz programme is now the oldest im my collection. The programme also has a ticket stub for the event, which featured Tubby Hayes, Don Rendell, Ronnie Scott, Allan Ganley, etc.

Otis Redding - Otis Blue / Otis Reading Sings Soul (Atlantic, 1966 Stereo Pressing)
Jazz Club - Vol 1 (JABB, 1984 First Pressing)
Don Shinn - Temples With Prophets (Columbia/Sunbeam Records, 202 Limited Pressing)

Some more carboot finds. The Otis Redding and Jazz Club were £1 together. The Don Shinn was sealed and includes a bonus 7".

Jackie McLean - Lights Out (Prestige/Esquire, 1957 First UK Pressing)
Mongo Santamaria - Sofrito (Vaya/Craft Records, 2022 VMP Exclusive Pressing)

I risked a bid on the Jackie McLean as it was in rough-looking shape but I expected it to just be cosmetic. A bit of patience and cleaning later and its come out looking and sounding fantastic (Heres a before/after)!

Anything particularly exciting? Did you go into Rob’s again?

I walked past Rob's and REALLY wanted to go in, but it's a place I need to spend at least 4 hours in to dig through stuff and didn't have the time. It looked even more full with records than usual (if you can imagine that). I had already gotten a lot of records in London too.

I went to a bunch of places in London and looked mostly for jazz there. Typically, I just try to buy UK reissues or pressings because I can find most other stuff in the US for cheaper. Then in Notts I went to Rough Trade (it was the only shop open the first time I went into town) and picked up a used copy of The Bridge: A tribute to Neil Young

Then I grabbed an OG Uk pressing of Leonard Cohen: Live Songs and the DeAgostini pressing of Lester Young, Roy Eldridge And Harry Edison – Laughin' To Keep From Cryin'. Those were from 33 Records in Notts.

I definitely want to go back to Rob's though. Next time we go back I'll set aside some time to go. That place is crazy haha.

I’m over now myself in 2 weeks but it’s just a flying visit for the weekend (a Ryanair €26 3 day job) and I’ll have to play uncle Joe for most of it so I doubt I’ll get into Notts, maybe a quick peek in HMV in Mansfield if my dad is going into town.

I should get over for a week at Christmas again so plan to head into notts then and have a few beers and a hunt! If our paths ever cross there you’ll have to let me get you a pint!

FedEx from Tokyo is crazy fast.

Just cleaning the vinyl. All are EX.
Just spectacular quality, especially for the age of these.

ODEON reminds me of the same look and feel as the newer Verve labels.

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother (-2000yen Printed) (ODEON) (OP80102) (942894)

Pink Floyd - Meddle (ODEON) (OP80375) (889099)

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (CBS SONY) (SOPO100) (1270778)

Pink Floyd - Ovscured By Clouds (ODEON) (EOP80575) (1220295)

Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (ODEON) (OP891213)

I'm sure we will cross paths at some point! Will definitely let ya know next time I'm in Notts.

At least you'll have Aretha waiting for you too!

The Bridge Tribute album is a lot of fun.

Some grabs from the UK and some that were waiting for me when I got home...

Leonard Cohen - Live Songs is a UK original.

The three Jack Johnsons were all recent restocks at retail. Now I just need the Curious George soundtrack to complete all the JJ albums I want....

Nada Surf is the Bandbox exclusive.

Spiritual Jazz: Impulse Records was a grab in the UK, as was The Bridge. Excited to listen to that one--bought it on a whim. I think someone here had posted about it awhile back on the Neil Young thread (or a thread about cover song compilations...) Picked up Bud Powell: A Portrait of Thelonious and Lester Young, Roy Eldridge And Harry Edison – Laughin' To Keep From Cryin' from some UK shops too. The Lester Young is from the DeAgostini series--shop I got it from had a ton of those in stock but that's the only one I grabbed.

The 4 Three Blind Mice reissues sound incredible. They were purchases from HMV in Japan and seem to be sold out at most places now. Definitely recommend those if you see them!

S.O.L.L. Test Pressing is from bandcamp. it's labelled as 2/10.

I'll be (hopefully) taking a break from buying records while I listen to all these and all the other stuff I brought back from the UK!

Very excited about my trip to In Sheeps Clothing this morning. They’ve become the spot to go to for anything on the more experimental, electronic, and deep listening side of things.

All killer, no filler.

I almost grabbed the Nala Sinephro at my local last weekend but wound up grabbing Mary Halvorson instead. Hoping I can still grab Nala later.
