Fresh Grabs

Nat Birchall - The Infinite (Ancient Archive of Sound, 2023 First Pressing)
Joe Pass - For Django (Blue Note/Pacific Jazz, 2022 Tone Poet Pressing)

First up is a couple of 'new' releases. Nat Birchall's Ancient Africa is an album that I pre-ordered a while back and it unexpectedly turned up the other day. I have @MikeH to thank for swaying me to get the Joe Pass Tone Poet, I seem to remember he praised it pretty highly when it was first announced. I have been slacking with the Tone Poets for a while because they just dont seem to appear for the sale prices that I was able to get all of my others for, but this one came up cheap as the top left corner is slightly dinged, still sealed. Looking forward to digging in.

Victor Feldman - In London - Vol I: The Quartet (Tempo Records, 1957 First Pressing)
Ernest Ranglin Trio - Wranglin' (Island Records, 1964 First Pressing)
Music In The Making - S/T (Vogue Records, 1954 First 10" Pressing)
Jeremy Robson & The Michael Garrick Quintet - Before Night/Day (Argo, 1966 First 7" Pressing)

A mix of British music. A while ago I was able to get Vol 2 of Victor Feldman In London for just £20, but this Vol 1 was the one I was really after. The line-up includes Feldman, Dizzy Reece, Phil Seamen, Terry Shannon, Lenny Bush and Pete Blannin....Killer!!! I saw the Ernest Ranglin in Soho recently for a staggering amount of money (I passed quickly) but luck was on my side and I was able to get this online significantly cheaper. Finally, a 10" with Don Rendell, and another Garrick 7".

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Gone With The Wind (Columbia/Coronet, 1959 First New Zealand Signed Pressing)
Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - Flight 17 (UGMAA Nimbus, 1978 First Pressing)

These are some pretty special records that I acquired this week. The Dave Brubeck is signed by the whole group, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Gene Wright & Joe Morello. Really cool and the copy I already have of this album is a cheapo reissue that I picked up at a carboot years and years ago which isn't the best sounding. Secondly, I was chatting to someone online recently and they happened to mention that they had a copy of Horace Tapscott's "Flight 17" which they were looking to sell. I never picked up the reissue when it was released a few years ago and supposedly it was never an official release anyway (who know?!) so im thrilled to have this!

Oh god I remember those loooong trips from Vancouver to Vic, transit all the way

This one's even longer!

Transit to Horseshoe Bay to ferry to Nanaimo where my car is parked to drive up to my folks' place at the north end of town to pick up the baby and drive back down to Esquimalt! 😬

But yeah the Vic/Van transit run is definitely a special kind of marathon that I've done more times than I can count - usually with an overloaded hiking backpack and a bag or four in-hand. 😵‍💫

I forgot to share my February grabs. There were so few of them that I decided to add some of my early-March grabs as well (it’s my birthday month, so surely there’ll be more!). As you can see I’m still deep into my ECM kick, which has helped me fill out the late 70s-80s hole in my jazz collection:

Grabbed a few things yesterday from my new, temporary local. I didn't have any of the early surf pop Beach Boys. It's not my favorite era of theirs, but kind of like the early Beatles, it's still fun to listen to. I also like how these album covers all connect. From the Beach Boys, to the Beach boys on a beach, to a man on a beach with factory background, to factory.

Its been a very busy couple of weeks buying and selling records. I culled a lot but then inevitably added more too!!

Muriel Grossmann - Birth Of The Mystery (Passerine Records, 2023 First Limited Pressing)
Nat Birchall Quintet - Live In Larissa (Sound Soul And Spirit Records, 2014 First Test Pressing)

First up, a couple of 'new' releases. The Muriel Grossmann was actually recorded in 2009 and released on CD only, with Passerine Records in the US re-releasing it as a limited vinyl pressing recently. Unfortunately, this copy arrived in the worst condition I have ever seen a new record, so many marks, dust and scratches. Passerine Records have kindly offered to send a replacement though, so all is good. Nat Birchall has uncovered a lot of test pressings and sold-out records that he has been selling on Bandcamp. They have been selling out almost instantly and I was lucky enough to get a test pressing of "Live In Larissa" which I have not been able to find since its release (for a reasonable amount anyway), so I was thrilled to get this.

Freddie Hubbard - The Night Of The Cookers - Live At Club La Marchal, Volume 1 (Blue Note, 1966 First Mono Pressing)
Billie Holiday - Acetate (Audio Services New York, Acetate Pressing)

I have had Vol 2 of "Night Of The Cookers" for a while and often go to it when I'm in the mood for a classic live recording, so I'm ecstatic to have managed to get a copy of Vol 1! The Billie Holiday was an interesting one. I saw it on eBay with few bids so I put £15 on it not thinking I would get it. It then ended up winning but due to my error it's actually a 78rmp acetate (I thought it was a 10" 33 1/3rpm) so I can't play it!! Doh!!! It will teach me to use the drop-down on eBay to read a bit deeper. Still, it's quite a cool oddity and contains 2 tracks, the A-side being from 1938 with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra and the B-side being from 1942 with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra.

Kenny Graham - Presenting Kenny Graham (Pyne Nixa, 1957 First Pressing)
Elton Dean's Ninesense - Oh! For The Edge (Ogun, 1976 First Signed Pressing)
The Alan Clare Trio - Jazz Around The Clock (Decca, 1958 First Pressing)
Tony Crombie - Whole Lotta Tony (Ember Records International Ltd, 1961 First Pressing)
Tony Crombie - Sweet Wide & Blue (Decca, 1960 First Pressing)

Some more British jazz goodness. I actually sold a big bulk of British jazz doubles this week so made some room for these thankfully! The Kenny Graham is blindingly good. The Elton Dean is special as its actually signed by him on the cover! The Tony Crombie "Whole Lotta Tony" is a really scarce album that I haven't seen for sale before.

The Dick Morrissey Quartet - Here And Now And Sounding Good! (Mercury, 1967 First Mono Pressing)
Mike Westbrook Concert Band - Release (Deram, 1968 First Stereo Pressing)
The Tony Kinsey Quartet - Time Gentlemen Please (Decca, 1959 First Test Pressing)

More doubles! I managed to offload a lot this week but then added these 3 doubles back into my swap/sell pile! The Dick Morrissey disc is in better condition than my other copy so I will swap that out. I have a mono pressing of the Mike Westbrook so I will see which I prefer. Finally, I really lucked out by buying a test pressing of Tony Kinsey's album for just £12!!

Got my Acen - Trip II The Moon dubplate record which i'm really excited for.
But the package was all soaked in the storm. Water leaked through packaging and all into the jacket so the jacket is soaked on the bottom Record is also warped. These are limited too so likelihood of getting a replacement is pretty slim :(

Here's the wrinkly sleeve. any tips of drying? I think if i airdry it will remain wrinkly. If i sandwich, i'm afraid it's going to come apart and stick to what i'm sandwich it with.
