Fresh Grabs

You could put the outer sleeve on in a way where the opening syncs up with the opening of the jacket but TBH, I would probably move it to the side as it covers half of Bowie’s head in its current iteration.
But...

I mean logistically speaking..

-shakily rotates record jacket-

The math involved is...

-gritting teeth-

In terms of the original design the fonts would be all...

-crying a little-

AaaaaAAaaaarrrRRRRR PEOPLE USED TO GET BURNED AT THE STAKE FOR LESS THAN THIS

Wasn’t it your people doing the burning? This should come natural to ya. 😉

Also I get it but if the graphic design was poor to begin with I think making an an adjustment for aesthetic enjoyment and ease of use makes sense.

I had a Japanese press of Who's Next but cannot remember which one. I found that the pressing lacked low end. You could Entwistle very clearly, just lacked ooomph.

But I have chased that dragon for too long (6 different versions) and settled on the MOV version as the best all-round sound for under $100. Either the bass sounds dull or Daltrey sounds reedy or the cymbals sound like wet cardboard. Very curious to hear how this Japanese pressing sounds.

There are lots of collectors, some of whom are in our midst, that don’t like to ruin the originality by taking off the shrink, they just make a slit in the open end to take out the records. They’ve never seen the inside of any of their gatefolds. They do often still put them inside an outer sleeve. It blows my mind.

Psa, this is not good for the covers or records

I do this on non gatefolds, when I can't get the hype sticker off easily, and on items Im not 100% sure about as it's easier to resell them. They do go into outers nevertheless - I'll agree that last bit is illogical.

Why is it not good for the covers or records though? Once you unseal the shrink there isn't the tension that can cause the record to warp.

The plastic used for shrink isn’t archival and most of it will shrink a bit over time too. It will leech color from the cover.

Kenny Burrell - S/T (Blue Note, 2022 Tone Poet Pressing)
Lee Konitz Plays With The Gerry Mulligan Quartet - S/T (Blue Note, 2021 Tone Poet Pressing)
Bobby Hutcherson - Stick-Up! (Blue Note, 2022 Tone Poet Pressing)
Etta James - Etta James Sings Funk (Cadet, 2020 Vinyl Me Please Pressing)

I have had a particularly good run of luck with finding Tone Poets at decent prices this past few weeks. The Burrell was in the HMV sale, the Lee Konitz was a Discogs purchase (sealed), and the Bobby Hutcherson was a low offer that was accepted. I missed the Etta James from VMP a couple of years ago and I managed to buy this sealed from an online seller. I also bought the VMP Bill Withers - "Just as I Am" but the seller sent the wrong record by mistake.

Peter Burman - Jazz Tête-à-Tête (Columbia, 1962 First Mono Pressing)
Lars Gullin – Gullin Originals Played By Lars Gullin Band (Esquire, 1953 First 10" Pressing)
Teddy Wilson Trio – Teddy Wilson Trio Plays (Esquire, 1953 First 10" Pressing)

Here's a few fantastic and cheap British jazz finds. The Peter Burman is a record that I have been wanting for a while but rarely see for sale, but an Instagram connection gave me a great deal on this because it had paint splatters on the front....that I managed to get off fairly easily!

Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana - Live Under Sky 1981 (Hi Hat, 2020 Unofficial Pressing)
Ginger Baker & Graham Bond - Live Bremen 1970 (Rox Vox, 2021 Unofficial Pressing)
Alice Coltrane - Carnegie Hall '71 (Hi Hat, 2019 Unofficial Pressing)
The Scorpions* & Saif Abu Bakr - Jazz, Jazz, Jazz (Bou Zaid Phone / Habibi Funk, 2018 Limited Pressing)

Well, it's carboot season again and I went to 2 this weekend! The first one was tiny and there were very few records but as I was about to leave I saw a seller setting up a table of hundreds of CD's. They were all bootleg recordings of rock (with a handful of jazz) taken from radio recordings or audience tapes. I was looking at a Miles Davis 80's recording and the seller happened to mention that he had a bunch of bootleg vinyl in his car that might have a jazz record in the mix. Now, I knew full well that these bootlegs would sound sub-par but my intrigue got the better of me and I found the Herbie Hancock with Carlos Santana, Ginger Baker with Graham Bond, and Alice Coltrane. The seller was offloading them for a few quid each so I went for it. I haven't had a chance to listen yet but it's incredible how 'official' they have tried to make them, with comprehensive liner notes and photos. Finally, an actual official release from the fantastic Habibi Funk for a couple of quid!!

Love – Forever Changes (Elektra, 1971 Pressing)
Doug Carn - Revelation (Black Jazz Records, 1998 Pressing)
Stan Sulzmann and Tony Hymas - Krark (Mosaic Records, 1979 First Pressing)
Johnny Griffin / Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - The Toughest Tenors (Milestone, 1976 First Pressing)
Shelly Manne And His Men - Live! Shelly Manne & His Men At The Manne Hole (Contemporary Records, 1961 First Pressing)
Pepper Adams - Pure Pepper (RCA/Savoy, 1984 German Pressing)
The J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding Quintet - Jay And Kai (Columbia, 1956 First 10" Pressing)

The second carboot was much bigger and turned up a lot more records. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the Black Jazz release, but it was a reissue. Still, for a couple of quid, I couldn't say no. The same seller had the Love "Forever Changes" which I haven't heard before but have seen the cover online a few times so worth testing for another couple of quid. Jazz In Britain reissued a digital version of "Krark" last year and it's great, so I really was excited to find this original pressing! Finally, 1 seller had a load of boxes of records priced at £2 each or 3 for £5. I picked up the 4 remaining records (Griffin/Lockjaw, Shelly Manne, Pepper Adams, Johnson/Winding) and the seller just took £5 for them....incredible. When I was checking the Pepper Adams I realised that I have the original pressing under a different title, "The Cool Sound Of Pepper Adams". Typical.

Grabbed a couple on this trip to Japan. The newest released Nujabes, I think this completes the discography except for Spiritual State. The other one is from Ado, the singer that gave voice to a character on the new One Piece movie. Not a fan of the series, but my GF likes how she sings so we grabbed the album to check it out.
