Fresh Grabs

Mixed bag of Japanese presses, a few OGs, the Dorham is a Connoisseur Collection reissue which I’ve never tried before.

Super stuff! Which pressing is the Mal Waldron? I have been looking for some of his stuff on vinyl for a while now

I received the Khemmis album a couple of weeks ago, but today was my first opportunity to blast it (home alone!). I also picked up this classic Priest album for $5 as a companion piece:

I was briefly in Barcelona last week and stumbled upon a flea market. Picked up the first Liars album, before they got too weird for my taste:

Last but not least, the goodies I got from last weekend’s Belle & Sebastian cruise festival:

How was the cruise?

I’m not much of a cruise guy but I was intrigued by this. I was there when they announced it during their primavera set in Barcelona last year.

How was the cruise?

I’m not much of a cruise guy but I was intrigued by this. I was there when they announced it during their primavera set in Barcelona last year.

My wife and I are not cruise people either (this was a first for both of us), and from what I could tell most attendees were on the same boat (pun intended). I think the workers on the onboard spa and fancy shops were confused by everyone's lack of interest in their overpriced offerings.

The cruise/festival was great! Belle & Sebastian played three sets and did not repeat a single song, so basically it was a 4.5-hour show spread over three days, including a full rendition of Fold Your Hands Child (my least-favorite of their albums, but they reworked some of the arrangements and it truly came alive) and a half-set of audience requests. They had a string quartet on stage for the last 2 sets, so most of the time it was an ensemble of 13 musicians. You can already see what they played on setlist.fm. Their songbook is so deep; despite playing three shows, they didn't touch well-known songs like "The State I Am In," "Like Dylan in the Movies," or most of big The Life Pursuit tunes. I didn't care because they played my favorite B&S song ("Stay Loose") plus several other personal favorites.

The other live acts were great, too. I saw Nilufer Yanya and Hinds three times each. I am lukewarm about her album, but Nilufer's music was incredible in a live setting. Very original, soulful, and much jazzier than the record conveys. Super tight band. Hinds in contrast was the best "bar band" onboard (I mean that in both a positive and negative way), with the best stage presence I've seen from anyone in ages. Pure energy and tons of charisma. Like Nilufer, they sound much better live than on the record. I also saw Alvvays twice, because I like them a lot.

IMO the main perk of going to a music festival on a boat was the variety of venues and how close you could get to each stage. I walked into a small theater 5 minutes before Mogwai took the stage and still got a front row seat (I actually moved to second row because it was the better view). I could watch the shows on the main deck from variety of angles, including behind the stage if I wanted to. In that and many other senses, it was truly a privilege to attend this kind of event. It was fun to see band members acting like normal people (e.g. eating from the same dubious 24-hour buffet, or taking a dip in the swimming pool less than 20 minutes before taking the stage); you could tell they were stoked to be on a cruise too, even though they had work to do.

There were also other perks and events for attendees to partake in, like trivia competitions (which was won by a team featuring members of B&S, prompting protests from other teams), or a wine tasting with Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, or yoga classes led by Frances McKee of the Vaselines. I didn't participate in any of those, but I did school the American comedian on the lineup during open-play soccer/football (because of course there was a sports court on the ship).

Tl;dr yes it was totally worth it. If they do this again I probably won't be able to swing it (logistically or financially) but I'd highly recommend it. Great entertainment all around.

DEAR LORD, FINALLY!!

Been looking for this for months! Yeah, I could've just ordered it, but I like buying widely released stuff in stores. And Barnes And Noble was able to help me out with this today! Nice red color, though pressed at GZ. Still, great EP/album/minialbum thing!

15?! I'm on 8, I think. Phrenology is the one I want as that came out when I was off vinyl before getting back on it. I do have an OG Do You Want More?! Illadelph and Things - they're my favourites.
To be fair im including a few live and collaboration albums in there. Jealous of your Do You Want More?! for sure!! The ones I lucked out on were Tipping Point and Phrenology, they were listed for £15-£20 so I assumed they were reissues and turns out they were both originals.
