Hey guys! I started doing something I wanted to do for a while: a chronological playlist of hip-hop classics/hits/landmark songs. It starts in the late 70s and is now up to 2019. Only rule is one song per album. I listened to a lot of hip-hop in the 90s, not so much in the 00s and a bit more in the 10s. I would like you guys to review this list and comment. What/who is missing, which songs should be replaced in a same album, which should be removed, etc... There are almost 400 songs already, lot are missing in the early days of hip-hop, some are not on Spotify and others I didn't checked for yet. Let me know your thoughts and I will keep adding. Thanks!

The more I listen to it, the more

A) The Damn and Kanye influenced production on the poppier stuff has clicked for me.
B) It's become clear that the use of minimalist or alienating production to create a mood or place the focus on the lyrics was a really smart, deliberate decision that he knew would upset some people but make for a stronger piece of art.

My homie who is an extremely talented musician (in multiple bands in SD) and, as a Jew, grew up worshiping hip-hop after being introduced to the Beastie Boys at a young age texted me after finding time to listen to the album last night.

"First of all, Kendrick transends hip-hop at this point. The fact that he has managed to reach the top of the game while making almost entirely concept albums and refusing to play by anyone elses conventions... he belongs in the same breath as the all-timers of any genre.

Also, I'm scrolling the reviews and of course Pitchfork has the lowest score. They are always wrong when it comes to rap. If they were any wronger they'd be Anthony Fantago".

To which I reponded... "the only thing worse than The Needle Drop is people who take his reviews super seriously".

10 minutes later this review dropped and we both had a good laugh.

I used to severely dislike Craptony Fandango, then he started to get a little less self serious about his work which helped, but I’ve never actually sat through any of his reviews.
