Hip Hop

I will never disagree with someone who says they hate Yeezus, even though I do personally like it. I still wonder why it clicked with me sometimes, but it did. Well said on the rest of your post.

I get that people love it too. I feel like most people who liked him at one point and feel like he shifted - I mean, he went from "George Bush doesn't care about black people" to All Lives Matter with Candace Owens, so it's a fair assessment - have different markers for where they believe that shift took place and to what degree. Some can be viewed retroactively.

Personally, I wasn't a big fan of hearing a song as important as "Strange Fruit" sampled to equate his personal garbage with lynchings. That album represented a bastardization of genuine struggles with a rich man's tantrum for me. If everything since then feels that way, that represented another jumping off point for me.

I already saw what went down with the Black Lives Matter thread that was created during the George Floyd protests and bounced on that trainwreck then. It's one of the reasons this is one of the only threads I even fuck with anymore.

So... after this post, I'm just gonna fall back and let white dudes discuss their feelings about black artists and race relations again, as usual. Stay corny with this shit.

I'd agree with your post, except I thought Yeezus was trash, too. Guy was just doing shit Madonna style and mining lesser known artists like Death Grips and B L A C K I E, while selling it to people who didn't know better like he was innovative. He's basically Taylor Swift with that fanbase rushing to his defense creating narratives that aren't even from his own making, handing out excuses and rationale he didn't even ask for. "He's a genius and what he's 'REALLY' saying isn't that at all... there's a deeper meaning. He's not really discussing being unable to get into fashion week with zero experience." Every time, that clown will go do an interview immediately after and say, "this IS all about a fashion line!" And people still won't admit it.

"Saying slavery is a choice is really about ___ There are layers, see?" Even after dude comes out and apologizes and retracts, fools still try and defend the cornball shit using the old conspiracies. His shit has been boring forever.

So here's a theory...

White people love Kanye because they can identify with him. He brought a suburbanized style with soul samples that polished some of that soul off. He's an in to a culture that a lot of people may love but didn't always necessarily connect to in the deepest way, because they can't identify with it in a spiritual or experiential level. So now they don't want to let that go.

I won't assume anyone's race in here, but as a larger statement overall, if you are a white dude hyping Kanye and excusing this shit, that's a bold fucking move. If you feel that your views on this matter are necessary or relevant, that's reflective of the greater issue connected to it. And if you identify with this guy, the question to ask is, to what extent. He espouses racist shit and he is praised for validating these views and making them acceptable? Anyone who sees that as a positive, connects with that, and applauds him for it... there's only one way to interpret that shit. The fact that more people feel emboldened and protected enough to proudly stand at his side announcing their support for his words, because it's empowering, is an acknowledgment that it is empowering certain groups, while ignoring who that power is taken from. It's also a reflection of why it's dangerous. Normally, logic would suggest distancing oneself from shit like this, but this cornball is using his platform to encourage anyone in positions of power to reject justice, compassion and responsibility in favor of white supremacy.

What percentage is "despite" versus "because of"?
I'm black. Bi-racial, technically.

Some interesting opinions here on white people supporting Kanye. freddie-gibbs-pants-removebg-preview-2-2.png

I like Yeezus too, and I never even considered Kanye's thoughts/politics at the time of that album. but then again it may have been the first Kanye album I ever listened to in full up to that point, so I really wasn't (or ever have been) too invested in the guy.

don't really disagree with anything else being said around here

Exactly the same with me. By then I was more or less over Kanye's "lyrics" anyways since so much of them were ghostwritten. That album was just electronic fun from a listening perspective for me. I definitely appreciate @Dead C's take on the background to his lyrics and themes on that album.

Fuck Kanye. Absolute waste of space and oxygen as a person. Pete Davidson is at least taking proper care of Kim and Kanye's kids.
Lmao. "Waste of space and oxygen as a person." And you think the right are the hateful ones? Also Pete Davidson and kim broke up a while ago so idk what you're even talking about or why that's even relevant other than to paint Ye as a stereotyped bad black father as the media always portrays him to villify him. Kanye seems to be a devoted father to me, interested in how his children are raised more than most.

The guys said white lives matter because it's hilarious that somehow such a benign statement is now seen as "hate," how about class solidarity instead of racial division that the powers that be try to divide us with. Damn. Saying "race X can't have an opinion on X because that's racist" is about as low as Boosie telling Ye to dye his skin white. So much hatred guised as being progressive.

"The guys said white lives matter because it's hilarious that somehow such a benign statement is now seen as "hate,""
It's because that and All Lives Matter came about solely as a retort to Black Lives Matter as a way to try and delegitimize a movement against wanton police violence and killings with no accountability. White Lives Matter as a phrase exists solely because of racism and hate. Using it and promoting it just props up white supremacy. Fuck that.

"as the media always portrays him to vilify him"
He does a fine job of that himself. My bad on not being up on Hollywood relationships.

man, I don't want to get into this here... but I don't think that statement is very benign.

trust me, I can understand that in a vacuum it could be considered benign statement, but that's not simply not the case here. whether he's being hateful or he's simply being cheeky (or anywhere in between) it's a dick move, not benign.

This shit is cringe as fuck, we really defending white lives matter statements and doing "so much for the tolerant left" shit in a hip hop thread?

Sorry to break up the Kanye discussion, but how long is the open preorder window for Super Tecmo Bo Vinyl? Do we know?

That being said , the Conductor Williams record is fire and i might have to buy the newer one too.. i also got a shipping refund for combining my two orders.
Must listen to the Craven album again though, not sure ill keep that one.

Dont get me wrong, i totally get why people feel the way about the guy running it.

Is it really shocking that some people who enjoy entertainment focusing on the plight and decimation of underprivileged communities they aren't apart of, connected to and doesn't affect them might absorb and process the product differently?

We're talking neoliberalism anyway and that's all gestural bullshit. It's about having other people who look like you reaffirming to each other that you're the "good people." If the perspective of someone with personal experience threatens to challenge that identity by stepping outside of the very one-dimensional caricature that is being exploited to validate that "story" supporting that identity, it's just an opportunity to dismiss them and threaten to abandon "allyship," which, in itself is a direct acknowledgment/flex and leverage of power.

As long as you have overtly despicable targets to point to, you get to view yourself as righteous by default. It exonerates anyone of deeper self examination. Nobody likes to be challenged. Kanye isn't challenging anyone with this shit, he's telling a bunch of white people they don't need to keep questioning how their actions and inactions affect others.

He had credibility in hip hop and regarding black liberation, so his cosign to white supremacy validates them automatically. For some, remaining a vocal Kanye fan might possess the same "validation" as claiming you have a "black friend," to deflect criticism if pressed on particular views. "I only support white supremacy as a brilliant publicity stunt, wherein the genius is yet to reveal itself." I imagine it's freeing people up and they'll throw good money at him for it. They're buying a service notarized by Kanye. The only card that Kanye can play is to say, as a black man, he's ultimately exploiting white racists for their money with this stunt, but even then, his personal hustle is at the detriment to the larger whole. Regardless of how you slice it, it's a selfish move with damaging repercussions.

Yeah.. the Conductor Williams is good. I feel the same way, unfortunately. It's about weighing how much you're willing to deal with for what you want

Folks can't see the irony in their responses and how "right" these ridiculous reactions actually prove Kanye to be.

the dude did something outrageous and people got outraged. not exactly sure what he proved.

to be fair, I haven't followed the whole story of his shirt further than reading the headline. if people are so outraged that they want to cut his head off and piss down his neck, then yeah he certainly exposed something... but if the general reaction is people think he's a dick for wearing that shirt I'd say that's a fairly rational response.
