Hip Hop

Definitely a contender for me.

After just telling a friend two days ago that while my top 3 for the year were still dancing around to find their exact ranking, they were pretty much set to remain my top 3 barring any waaay out of left field surprise... well, here we are.

What were the 3?

Not hip hop.

...for some reason i want to be secretive about it, but I don't really understand what that stands to gain. Weird.

Amigo the Devil, Blood Incantation and Haley Heynderickx were my floating top 3, and are now 3/4 of my floating top 4.

Blood Incantation was sick. Not familiar with the others. At the end of every year I can barely remember what came out 😂

It's always been hard to pick a favorite Kendrick album but if it keeps up like this it's going to EASILY be my favourite.

EDIT: First the Nas homage now Tupac on reincarnated?

Nothing's ever passing up To Pimp a Butterfly in my book. I listened to that album nearly 50 fucking times the week it dropped. That said, I welcome any Kendrick album. GOAT.

Yeah. I don’t think anything’s passing GKMC either. I like this one better than Mr. Morale. DAMN. is kind of its own beast.

Also, is Kendrick in his weird voice phase?

Still digesting. I'm a Morale defender. I think it's his best album lyrically (but has some iffy production in spots). Beat wise, I might agree with you though.

This one definitely takes much of the evolution and depth of Morale and dishes it up more digestably, without sacrificing anything. For that alone I think it's an incredible step up and forward!

For me the production is a absolutely insane on the majority of this album. But i honestly don't know wtf Kendrick was thinking on some of these tracks. His rapping, flows, voices, delivery and execution are all damn near awful to me in parts.

He'll start of killing a track but then switch to some other extra shit and try to do some "anthem" stuff and it just ends up ruining the whole feel of the song to me.

I hope with more listens I catch up to it and it ends up clicking with me or something because I could easily see this being one of, if not his best project yet just off the production and "fun" factor alone. This is the type of production and energy I've been needing from Kendrick but I think i just can't catch the execution of it all yet.

I felt/feel basically the same way about Not Like Us. There's something about the way he's rapping and shit that is throwing me off bad. 😥

It feels a little bit different and better executed on this album though, imo, so I'm hopeful.

Still absorbing the lyrics, but I think GNX has my favorite Lamar production since TPAB. And 6 rotations deep I think this is where I'm at:

S Tier
1) TPAB
2) GKMC

A Tier
3) GNX
4) Mr. Morale

A Tier (by any other rapper's standards)
5) Section 80
6) Damn
7) Untitled

Obviously, I'm in the minority in Damn being my least favorite.
