I respect Benny and Con's decision to cash their chips in with these overpolished albums but yah... Nothing on BOP touches the hardness (pause unpause) of 18 Wheeler... I was hoping Hit Boy would bring that "Backseat Freestyle" energy but he really didn'tThe disrespect Plugs I Met gets on this forum always baffles me.
Stuff like this is why I always think it's hilarious when I see people gushing over "lyricism" when it comes to WSG, like I'm pretty sure that's not his appeal at all and it's the default compliment people pay to rappers when they just hate trap musicWestside Gunn's formula is grabbing a beat that has 2 strokes of a piano every few seconds and start each verse with "ayo" followed by stretching out his words in his high pitched tone.
"Ayo, you know I got the strap on
Homies tryna fine meeeeee
They don't know tho that I'm 'bout that moneeeeeeey"

I too got on the Griselda train later than most. I absolutely love Benny now though I personally think he is the best Griselda member with Conway a close 2nd . TT3 & Plugs I Met are my favourites. I am really loving this new album tbh but my music tends to lean to the more commercial side than most of ya"ll so perhaps that's why. Even though most people I know wouldn't consider my listening commercial at all, just compared to this thread it definitely isI was late to the Griselda train so wasn't listening when a lot of the "classic" projects were released. But I really enjoyed this Benny project. Sure probably not as good as TT3, but I don't think that's really a knock at all as TT3 is really amazing (so sad I wasn't into them at this time to get that vinyl). Not that I'm trying to move past this project, but damn I can't wait for the Benny x Harry Fraud project, especially now.
And yeah I'd probably rank the Conway project above this, but only slightly. I always have trouble ranking Conway and Benny (really not all that into most Westside projects). I think the fact that Conway seemingly has more outputs that are all really high quality that he might be slightly ahead for me there too.
I've been meaning to check out Detroit 2 for a bit... while I think his last 2 albums were absolute disasters I quite liked Dark Sky Paradise and the first Detroit tape at the time, even if I haven't gone back to them much in recent years I remember them being goodI too got on the Griselda train later than most. Saying that i may aswell add.....while admittedly i it is not the best album of the year I think I've settled on Detroit 2 as my favourite of the year so far. I felt Sean needed a W with this album and got it. I watched his Joe Budden interview back around February I think and I was anticipating this release all year it didn't disappoint me. I also feel with that interview, his mental health struggles and this albums content, I got to know Sean better than ever before and I actually been wrong about him all along. He isnt this flashy confident chick's love him type of dude at all, he actually seems super humble & an overall great guy. All this adds to why its my favourite
I really liked I Decided. Double or Nothing and Twenty88 not so much tbh. If he missed with Detroit 2 he was in trouble but I've got a whole new found respect for him seeing his interviews this year and how open he has been with his mental health struggle. I think D2 is great. As I said there is definitely better albums this year but this is my favourite I keep finding myself going back to it I just really enjoy itI've been meaning to check out Detroit 2 for a bit... while I think his last 2 albums were absolute disasters I quite liked Dark Sky Paradise and the first Detroit tape at the time, even if I haven't gone back to them much in recent years I remember them being good
I actually lean extremely commerical compared to this thread as well lol. Judging from posts I see, I'm pretty sure our tastes line up pretty similarly tbh.I too got on the Griselda train later than most. Hall Of Fame is cool to me. I think DSP and D2 are definitely his two strongest projects. He has been doing good on a bunch of features too this year (usually produced by hit boy lol) I think he can hold his own against others but he has dropped some seriously questionable and corny lines over the years. Way back I didnt like him at first at all tbhI actually lean extremely commerical compared to this thread as well lol. I've always like Sean tbh. Never really understood the amount of hate he gets. I Decided and Double or Nothing didn't really do much for me outside a couple tracks but I enjoy pretty much everything else he's done (I pretend Twenty88 doesn't exist as everything they do is insanely disappointing to me). I even liked Hall of Fame a lot which everyone seems to hate .
DSP and Detroit for me. And sure some lines are "corny" I guess. I just don't think he really has more than any other mainstream artist, just we like to focus on it because it's become a meme. Like Wayne has a plethora of cornball / goofy lines and they all seemingly get passes / praised as some genius, well because we love Wayne. So for me, it doesn't cloud my listening all that much.Hall Of Fame is cool to me. I think DSP and D2 are definitely his two strongest projects. Thats actually a really valid point. I need to stop bringing it up actually. Its almost like a pathetic defense technique on my part when I'm trying to tell people he is actually a great rapper lolDSP and Detroit for me. And sure some lines are "corny" I guess.
