Home Improvement Thread 2: Electric Redo the Loo

I think that's a good call, it's a great space to have the option of using. I've got a wood heating stove in there, but I've never actually used it. But yeah in terms of sound baffling, I'm not sure if it's the fact that the door is always open or the ceilings are pretty high or that cinder block doesn't reflect sound as much as one would think, but it really does sound pretty good in there so you probably won't have to worry too much about that.
I wish I was actually building something! Probably more like a more thought-out patio with some spaces/slabs for coverings. Then I’ll run new a circuit and conduit out there. It’s so annoying - I’ve got a little more than a quarter acre, but the house/garage is all situated in the front half of it, with the garage between the house and the rest of the yard. Trying to make that space more than just another damn thing to mow.

Plant ground cover and get rid of that grass, takes almost no water and never need to mow it. Make a slate stone path through the ground cover with landscape lights along the path to a slightly raised wooden deck with a metal pergola with moveable canvas panels for sun shade. Like this:

Run some power or just use a decent Bluetooth speaker setup, the JBL Flips can be linked and are weather proof so you can have several of them running in sequence and they last for like 9 hours. You could do all that for relatively cheap depending on how you want to do it. Or totally do something else, just a thought...

That’s exactly the sort of thing I’m hoping for. But done by someone who knows more landscaping than I do. It’s important to know your skill sets, and that definitely ain’t one of mine.

Ooh I’m interested In how it turns out… you getting stamped or just brushed ?
Stamped. We were gonna do a sidewalk addition from the area that's not formed out yet to our fence entrance, but budget became a factor.

Thinking of doing a built in bench around the area where the siding is in bad shape. This will definitely be a work in progress for a while as budget allows, but a lot better than the hazard of a deck we had before!

Yeah we are getting quotes and was planning on stamped but was surprisingly unaware on his much more it costs…can’t wait to see how yours turns out 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah, this alone is gonna be about $9k, and the sidewalk was gonna be another $3k. That being said, still cheaper than all the wooden deck quotes we got this spring when lumber prices were still at their peak. Wonder how that'd change if we got quotes for a wooden deck now.

Is there a magic trick to get a contractor to call you back? The last three major works I’ve had done, getting anyone to even call me to give a quote has been nigh impossible.

This round it’s landscapers. 5 calls, promising they’d get together to talk and set up a quote; zero calls back. No one wants to turn me loose with a Bobcat, so it’s really in the best interest of the community for them to call me. But alas…

The problem right now, at least around these parts, is that contractors have so much work available to them that they're just not bothering with anything that isn't a massive massive job. When I was looking to get my basement finished I also had a hard time getting anyone to call me back, there's just so much work that they're being super choosy with what they book. But I honestly don't know how to get around that. Maybe ask up getting when they have time and try to book around their openings rather than your own, it sucks but it might help...

That’s kind of the feeling I get around here too with demand being high. I can be super flexible, but just getting someone to return the call has been impossible. I really don’t want to resort to Guy From Craigslist but ugh. Starting to feel like the only option.

Keep trying, avoid guy from Craigslist. I "guy from Craigslist"ed my eaves and it was a fucking disaster. I knew I shouldn't but hey JUST THIS ONE TIME. Absolute psycho. Never again.

Yeah, I kinda need someone responsible and more importantly, insured. I need some fill work and some grading done in my yard where I had a monster tree removed (so I can reseed in the fall) and I don’t need BillyBob and his rented Bobcat clipping any lines or anything.

Anyone ever replace their tv set with a projector/screen? I asked in the television thread about what set to replace my broken tv with, but my wife's thrown a monkey wrench into the works by suggesting we just get that projector setup we've always talked about. Right now we have a cheapo projector and portable screen we break out for special occasions or (pre-COVID) group movie nights, so I could just get a mount and ceiling-mounted screen for now, then replace the projector down the road.
