This thing about personas - to me image, characters, sleeve art, visuals, personality, it's all part of the package an artist is putting out there. It's part of a whole with the music and helps tell the story the artist wants to tell. It can serve to draw you in (I mean that's the whole point). There's nothing wrong with it. Then the music matters too. I tend to take it or leave it as a whole. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I mean he wanted to be Guthrie and as coy as he can be, I don’t think he’s ever been less than honest about that.

I am not saying he was dishonest at all. That is my point, he was playing the part. He just wasn’t telling every interviewer that he was doing a bit every time someone was doing a write up about him. He was letting the mystery be which allowed fans to imagine him as a tramp poet.

I think Hannah Montana was probably you know forced on her and more of a Monkees move but definitely a commercial thing.

Her career as Miley though probably has more to do with how fucked up it must have been to play a character and have it kind of consume you as a kid. Beyond talented, are we sure she knows who she is?

Gotcha. Yeah, my oldest was obsessed with Hannah Montana but not into Miley’s adult career. She listens to a lot of pop and a lot of progressive RnB in addition to all the progressive bluegrass stuff that we both adore.

All kidding aside, I have never actually listened to a Train album before. I often listen to a greatest hits album in these scenarios to determine a road map of where to explore. By the second song, I was like “oh this is gonna be one of those deals where I know all the songs by heart because ubiquity.”
