Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Wouldn't be much scotch at the moment without the bourbon barrels though. So there's that at least. (I love both)

Iā€™ve never had good bourbon tbh to compare. Thereā€™s so much good local and Scottish stuff that itā€™s not really that widely available unless you go looking for it.

Your area has a rich Whiskey tradition so I'm not surprised but Bourbon is huge globally. I know for a fact that it's beloved in East Asia. As well as Mexico

Oh yeah I know, Iā€™m never that serious when teasing about these things, Iā€™m not a complete dick.

Iā€™ve just only had the mass market crap thatā€™s on supermarket shelves and digging deeper isnā€™t necessary when I can get a good local one off the same shelf! If Iā€™m ever over there Iā€™d enjoy finding more out and visiting a few distilleries. I could imagine someone from your neck of the woods that had only tried Bells (shudder) might not think so kindly about scotch either...

Never heard of Bells. The bottom shelf at the bars here is usually Dewar's white or Johnny Walker Red.

I love all the stuff that ST pays homage to, but imma still pass. Iā€™ll just rewatch the stuff from my childhood if I wanna relive that stuff.

Except The Neverending Story. Let that stay in the memories where it belongs. It doesnā€™t hold up. At all.
LOL! I am binging Stranger Things Season 3 and the theme song from "Neverending Story" factors into the plot. I shit you not!

Over the past few years I've slowly been forced into the craft beer life. I'm from central Oregon, and I live in Portland a couple months out of the year, so every year I essentially am making a pilgrimage from one craft beer Mecca to another. I'm pretty sure there are more breweries in Bend than there are grocery stores. Deschutes is popular for a reason, it's good, but if you're ever in Oregon, Crux is where it's at. Also, McMenamins Edgefield just outside of Portland has some of THE best cider you'll ever have in your life

Edgefield is the best! Whenever I'm home visiting my family in Portland, we make at least a few trips out there. Those beer-battered tater tots are perfect. I'm not huge on cider (usually too sweet and gives me headaches) but I like the blackberry cider they have in the summer (and their apple is good, too). I always do the wine tasting flight, too, just because you get a lot to drink and it's fun to sit there and chat, and then you can just wander around aimlessly through the gardens and stuff to find one of the little bars in the little houses and get another drink and listen to the live music. I've still never played golf or stayed at the hotel there or soaked in the pool but I'll get around to it eventually. I swear, every other time I go there, I discover a new bar on the property that I had no idea existed.

Iā€™m visiting Portland later this year and intend to visit a few of them. Portland has the highest concentration of breweries per square mile in the country. Asheville NC is second. I visited it a few months back and didnā€™t care for the town itself but the breweries are everywhere. My Untapped numbers got quite a boost šŸ˜¬ :p

If you like sour beers, you should go to Cascade Brewing on Belmont. They have a large selection of incredible sours and you can taste 2 at a time in little taster glasses for like $2-3 each. Rose City Sour, Figaro, Apricot, Sang Noir, Pearpawsterous, Peche Fume, and Framblanc are all highly recommended.

If you're short on time, Henry's Tavern has a lot of decent beers on tap from a few different local breweries (as well as other domestics and imports), so you can just plop down and cover a lot of ground all in the same place.

Also, I tried watching a few episodes of both the Wire and Breaking Bad and couldn't get into either of them. I've seen two seasons of Mad Men and gave up on that, too. Watched one season of the Sopranos. I intend to watch them all eventually but none of them are really calling out to me. "Selfish people making a series of self-destructive decisions" just isn't a compelling narrative that I want to spend dozens of hours with. What kind of mood do you have to be in to enjoy watching these shows? It seems masochistic unless you convince yourself that there's something cool or interesting about drug dealers or mob bosses or womanizing-while-selling-people-things-they-don't-want-or-need. Maybe I'm just being unfair because I made it all the way through Boardwalk Empire, and it was fairly forgettable, and I think the only thing that kept me going was vague historical interest since it was actually based on people who existed and things that really happened.

We saw Blitzen Trapper and Fabre June Smooshy At Edgefield last summer. It was one of my favorite shows ever and a lot of it had to do with the ambiance, such a relaxed and comfortable venue.

I love all of these shows and they all have their virtues. I love Mad Men for the period pieces and profound mundanity of modern life in the 1960ā€™s. For me, the ā€œfeelā€ of a show matters more than plot lines. To put it in a music parlance Mad Men is ā€œThe Nationalā€ of TV Shows you either enjoy it immensely or donā€™t understand what all the fuss is about.

The appeal of Breaking Bad I think builds off the Sopranos itā€™s the long game development of an anti-hero. Neither of these shows can be truly appreciated in just a few episodes, the development is nuanced that it might need a season long arch to appreciate how much the character has changed.

The Wireā€™s appeal comes from itā€™s realness. There isnā€™t an easy bad guy or good guy. You root for people to succeed but there is a giant gray area. I actually watched and quite enjoyed Simonā€™s ā€œTremeā€ before going back to ā€œThe Wireā€ and I have enjoyed his latest ā€œThe Deuceā€ as well, Simon makes you feel comfortable in every show he puts together you just have to decide if you enjoy the company.

I am going to add Deadwood to the list too as I donā€™t think any western has ever been done better. Lots of gray area morality going on in this show too.

The problem with cider is that 90% of it is horrible sweet stuff that makes you want to vomit after about 2 pints.

Now proper West Country/south west cider thatā€™s a approaching double figures % abv and is as dry as a good white wine, now thatā€™s good stuff.

Get some rattler down you!

The print on your glass reminded me......has anyone ever had a 'snakebite'? Half lager and half cider.
Then there's the 'snakebite and black, same as above bit with a splash of blackcurrant cordial.

We used to drink these all the time at university (until the local pubs banned them) because they were cheap and would get you wasted at lighting speed.

Itā€™s fine. As a red ale itā€™s a different kettle of fish altogether though so thereā€™s no Guinness wars really haha! I think the Guinness mega corp owns it too. Kilkenny is another red ale thatā€™s meant to be good too. My go to red ales though are both craft, but everywhere on tap here, called Rebel Red and Cute Hoor.
are you aware that Cute Hoor is a fake craft beer, as it is produced by Heineken, while Rebel Red (Franciscan well) is owned by the other giant of beer producers that is Molson Coors? this is why you can find them on tap in pubs.
There's lots of ostracism towards proper craft beer producers, and in my opinion, the best option is to look for the bottle selection, rather than tap.
I'm a Wicklow Wolf man myself.... and there's plenty of options....
my favorite, but quite difficult to find is Locavore IPA! (all hops and ingredients sourced locally within the county)

Also don't dismiss cans. Bottles are for snobs. Can is actually a better way to store individual beer.

sure, I go for cans when buying in Off Licences, but pubs don't have cans (generally), so bottles is the option.
I am very lucky for living 2 minutes walk away from the Best Off Licence in Ireland (official title - 2 years in a row).
They have an amazing national and international selection of craft beers (over 450) and lots of independent wine from small producers (500 options here too).
they do amazing tasting events and it's been a learning experience.
Blackrock Cellar is the name, if you pass by Dublin!

Thatā€™s disappointing!

My favourite craft brewer, English I know, is beavertown, their Smog Rocket smoked porter is a special beer, I struggle to find it over here though, we only seem to get the Neck Oil or Gamma Ray IPAs! At my off licence I tend to go for Galway Bay Brewing Company, I do like their Milk Stout, itā€™s good!

Iā€™m overdue a Saturday trip to Blackrock for a wander, Iā€™ll have to give your offy a visit! Iā€™ll just have to stay out of Cloney, Iā€™ve spent enough on hifi gear this year...
