Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

HTTT and TKOL are probably the worst radiohead have got (except maybe pablo honey but thats more because they were just starting out and getting their feet wet). but even then i told my brother when he gave me hail to the thief on vinyl that "hey the worst of radiohead is still better than what most artists will do in their lives"
I've always loved Hail to the Thief, but I can look at it somewhat objectively and see the qualms people have with it. I just don't happen to have those same issues and most of the problems people have with it (length, unfocused tone) are things I actually enjoy about it.

i really like hail to the thief because its just a good sounding rock album that has one of their best tracks on it with "there there" and is overall pretty enjoyable even if its a bit unfocused, i wasn't even bugged by the length like a lot of other people were. its certainly not as good as something like in rainbows or ok computer but its still a really great album

I could probably easily be convinced that it is one of the decade's best tbh, lol. It was by far one of my favorite projects of 2017 and, if Here Comes the Cowboy is any indication, one he probably won't top anytime soon.

The only album I liked more than TOD in 2017 was DAMN. which, to lapse back into hot takes for a second, imo is Kendrick's best album in terms of replay value.
Here Comes The Cowboy was a let down but "On The Square" is one of the best songs of the year. I also really dig the feel of "Nobody" that said. I'm a TPAB disciple that album blew my mind to peices. Damn. Is great but....

FWIW, I do like some of their releases: I'm In Your Mind Fuzz, Nonagon Infinity, and Polygondwanaland are all really enjoyable albums. And yeah, it's partially unfair to hold their rabid fanbase against them, and I try to not let it cloud my judgement of the actual music. I think my problem moreso is how hard they purposefully play into the gimmicky nature that entices a lot of the diehard fans in the first place. Gimmicky isn't even necessarily a bad thing - like I said earlier, I liked Nonagon Infinity, I found the microtonal album interesting, Quarters was another good album - but practically every album of theirs has some sort of catch to it, be it a musical aspect or the way they released it or what. But then the music, at least in my opinion, is all still very similar, with just a thin blanket of new genre stylings to make it seem more fresh than it is. It'd be one thing if they were making through-and-through boogie or jazz rock albums that were strongly rooted in the genres' histories (while still being experimental or having the classic Gizz sound incorporated), but when I listen to those albums, it honestly comes across as them just using the most absolutely surface level elements of the aesthetic of whatever genre they're painting themselves as this time, and I personally can't find any sincerity in that. I'm DEFINITELY not saying there's none there, or that the musicians themselves are insincere or anything, I'm just saying it doesn't come across to me.

You basically summed up my thoughts on black midi too haha - Even though nothing about their new album is particularly new to me, and it is kind of odd to hear them being praised as innovators creating a brand new sound, I do enjoy the album a whole lot. I moreso enjoy it because it's a nice refresher and reminder of a sound that isn't really prevalent anymore. And I think that's why I can enjoy it - if EVERY indie darling was taking cues from Pere Ubu and Drive Like Jehu, black midi would be just another face in the crowd, but because they're working from a style that no one is really imitating these days, it works! Funny enough, it's EXACTLY how I felt about that Daughters album from last year (though I think black midi is still a bit more interesting to me)
Those are my favorite albums as well, along with FMB (which I do really like) and I have MotU but I'd maybe trade it for Sketches, I don't like it as much as I thought. I look at it differently, I think they are having a great time and doing whatever they feel like and not trying to craft any masterpieces or anything, which I think is kind of respectable in and of itself, it just means some of them are worth buying to me and some aren't. Depends on whether or not it seems to click with me that time.

Do you feel similarly about (Thee) Oh Sees? I feel kinda similar about them but their highs are higher for me along with less lows. They are one fo the few artists I take a chance with on pre-orders (Even though the last one was probably the weakest recently for me).

golden hour wasn't for me mostly because it sounded too much like colbie caillat of all things... i listened to it and all i thought was "this sounds like that realize song that came out back in the early 2000s"

On the topic of Radiohead:

- The Bends is my least favorite Radiohead album. At least Pablo Honey had some standard 90s rock fun to it - with The Bends, it still felt like Radiohead didn’t have enough prowess to reach the full potential of what they were reaching for

- My “top 3” is the same as pretty much everybody’s (OKC, Kid A, In Rainbows), but TKOL is my next favorite

On the topic of films (I actually don’t know the exact temperature of these takes):

- Blade Runner 2049 > Blade Runner

- Alien > Aliens

- Independence Day Resurgence > Independence Day (and I hated Resurgence)

To me it's very hard to compare TPAB and DAMN., because they're two very different albums, but I think it's bullshit for people to think that he took a step down in ability or quality with DAMN. Just because the production wasn't as experimental doesn't mean it's not a great album. Plus imo it was a fantastic follow up to TPAB, taking the themes of that album about community and identity and turning them on himself.

Yeah they're not comparable at all. TPAB is just what I prefer

What are you talking about??? People freaking love The Bends!

I agree though. It's one of their most solid albums overall even if I don't return to it as much as other albums by them.
99% of Radiohead praise tends to consist of OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows. I never hear about the bends.

Maybe we've just been around different circles then. I've always thought of The Bends as one of RH's most widely liked and acclaimed albums, even people who don't care for post-OKC Radiohead still like The Bends.
If Kendrick had taken off / replaced LOYALTY, LOVE, and HUMBLE, then DAMN would easily be my favorite album of his.
Definitely need more Kendrick on Bekon's production.
"LOVE." gets a lot of shit (and I can see why) but I really like corny, silly love songs so that song is just a plus to the album for me. I like "LOYALTY." but I agree "HUMBLE." was good as a single but in the context of the album it's one of the weaker tracks.

The Bends is beloved of, and enshrined by, a generation of fans of my vintage and older who seem to think that they went all weird and shit with Kid A. They’re idiots.

That said The Bends is fucking epic, pretty much 12 killer singles and the song The Bends and Street Spirit (Fade Out) are personal highlights...
