The Wax Wing is interesting. I’m curious, but still digging my DL MP7B. I’m debating getting another or trying a Sutherland phono pre. I was going to sell my Project DC Evo, but decided to keep it for a 2nd system because it sound so good with the MP7B. Thus, I need another phono pre. My old Project Phono Box S2 doesn’t cut it for me anymore. After REALLY eyeballing a Parks Audio Waxwing but deciding I like my 20/20 too much, I am getting the SU-320. Should be here next week.
Glad to hear that the RF1 worked for you! There can be a number of reasons for low frequency aberrations, filtering is the best way to handle all of them regardless of source.Got the KAB RF1 a few days ago but installed it today. First tried without to see if isolation did the trick (it didn’t). I don’t have a fluid damper and not planning on adding one anytime soon but I’m fairly sure it wasn’t resonance anyway. Either way, RF1 eliminated woofer pumping. Early impressions are it isn’t degrading sound. Best of all: I can use my Sutherland again .
After a bit more listening I think it trims *some* of the bass fat, but there’s still plenty of low endGlad to hear that the RF1 worked for you! There can be a number of reasons for low frequency aberrations, filtering is the best way to handle all of them regardless of source.
Specs: KAB Electro Acoustics http://www.kabusa.comWhat is the roll off spec for the KABs?
I have no real understanding of the engineering side of things but acoustically still gauging if it’s making any difference. Haven’t done any proper A/B testing, but I’ll probably do a bit more critical listening tomorrow.Michael Fidler designs a similar "cross feed" and subsonic filter into his phono designs: the MC Pro, the MM Pro and the Spartan 15.
What load setting did you use on the 20/20 with the SUT?Welp, my Denon AU-320 arrived, but...uh, the transformer doesn't work. The passthrough functions fine, but as soon as I engage the SUT the volume actually DROPS by a ton. I've reached out to the seller in Japan to arrange a return. Bummer!
The Zephyr goes back on the shelf for now.
Yep.What load setting did you use on the 20/20 with the SUT?
Also, why shelve the Zephyr? The 20/20 is perfectly capable of playing it without a SUT.
Edit: Nevermind on the second question - I saw in an earlier post that you were going for flip-switch convenience. So I presume the loading was 47K and 40 dB gain for both the pass through and SUT settings?
This is a bit of grasping at straws but, is it wired backwards?Yep.
The seller (in Japan) is refunding me half the cost of the device, so I will probably open it up and Deoxit some switches and attempt to troubleshoot. Hopefully I can figure out a fix.
Stop fighting it. You know you want to try the Waxwing. And I might be interested in a used 20/20.MUST NOT BE TEMPTED INTO A WAXWING. I LOVE MY 20/20
I was in the middle of writing out a response concerning how this couldn’t be the case because the SUT has a hardwired output but I just realized that you might be right. This is a bit of grasping at straws but, is it wired backwards?
Happy to hear that. Something felt off in it working straight-through but with low volume when engaged.@Angsty it, uh…it worked.
there is a bit of hum at higher volumes, but apparently SUTs are quite sensitive to that so I might need to do some rearranging of electronics to minimize.
Thank you!Happy to hear that. Something felt off in it working straight-through but with low volume when engaged.
Hope you get the sound quality you were looking for!
