It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

England look like shit

Wouldn't be surprised if Scotland steals the lead right after the half

Scotland have been excellent. Really nullified England’s main threats and Adams has given so much. The fear is though that’s a failure to take chances will come back to haunt because that England bench is deep.

Also after a sticky start, struggling to adjust to the pace of the match, Gilmour’s influence has really grown on the match.

Is this basically a cup final for Scotland since they don’t expect to win the whole thing? It would be tragic for England to lose as well.

Yes and no. That’s a tad condensending because of the historical rivalry and the fact that as much as this is the one game Scotland want to win it’s also the one game England absolutely don’t want to lose. But also a grain of truth.

Think of it a bit like when your team used to play Arsenal before Arsenal went a bit shit.

That Scotland needed two subs only says everything about the speed of the english game. On the other hand, that's how the teams that win the cup in the end usually go to the opening stages ( see Portugal 2016) while the Dutch and belgiums that win big every game go out in the quarter- or semifinals

Sorry if this was mentioned (I didn’t go back to look), but there was an article in The Athletic yesterday stating that due to quirks of the brackets, England (or whoever) would actually be better off coming in second in the group. I’m NOT implying that this had anything to do with today’s outcome:

The team that tops Group D will face the runner-up from Group F, which you may also know as France, Portugal and Germany’s group, which you may also know as the group of infinite terror. But the team that finishes second in Group D will face the team that finishes second in Group E. It’s a quirk of the format that necessitates two runners-up facing each other, which doesn’t seem fair and in fact seems actively stupid. But if the system is there to be gamed, then someone should game it.

Essentially, this is the difference between playing either Germany or Portugal in the second round — assuming France crush everyone like tiny bugs as they almost certainly will — or one of Slovakia, Sweden or Poland, assuming Spain pull their collective finger out and manage to score some goals as they… might do.

Head said it was going to be 1-1 at best or 3-0 England. Heart said 2-1 Scotland. Didn’t see us keeping them out.

Excellent performance from the whole side, only disappointment is not getting a goal. We had a bit of luck with England’s chances not going in but it feels like the worst of them were early on.

just need to carry it into the Croatia game.
