It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Fortunately, the teams don't seem to buy into any sort of bitter rivalry. Neuer announced that the german team will go down on their knees in solidarity with the english team while harry kane will like neuer wear a rainbow coloured captains armband

Yeah I mean the generation of World War II have mostly gone and their kids are dying off too now. I don’t think any of the England team would have been born in 96, nevermind 90, for the shoot outs.

That said I don’t think there was ever particular nastiness with the players, even in 66 and 70 when the war was in recent living memory the likes of Charlton and Beckenbaur were hugely respectful and complimentary towards each other.

The problem was always with the tabloid press hyperbole and a certain type of tool that’s drawn to the national team, and in particular to declaring war on the town centre of small European cities after drinking the place dry…

And the article is right, there was a pretty nasty rivalry with the Netherlands in the 90s and some rivalry with Italy, but from the German site never anything particularly heated against England. English football was always greatly appreciated by German soccer fans. So the English tabloid headlines were more recognized with the sortof embaressement you have for the crazy drunk uncle at a wedding.

England - Europe’s grumpy old drunk uncle at the wedding. That’s so on the nose it’s ridiculous!

Not England as a whole but the tabloid press. I think it always carried over that the introduction of football to Germany in the 19th centuryas from teachers who were hugely influenced by English culture while sports in ermany were mainly gymnastics and in the beginning football was ridiculed as the english disease and even forbidden temporarily. So football gained attraction with students at first and was also a praise of English style and fairness and a rebellion against Prussian militaristic views on sports. That's not an everyday topic with football fans but I think this undertone of football as an English thing and admiration for this always carried on in germany. So I think if germany goes out tomorrow there will be many german football fans rooting for England from then on.

I think Denmark will make it and play whomever wins between Italy and Belgium

Belgium were good in the first half but looked shattered in the second and de Bruyne and Hazard will be huge misses. Italy have played the best football so far but they really struggled against an Austria team that put it up them so how might they react to a better team doing that?

I don’t think there is any obvious winner or path left in this one.

Yeah if you look throughout Europe and South America it was largely British merchants that’s spread the game. It’s why the Spanish still call their managers “mister”.

So most likely no one from the group of death is advancing to the quarter finals

Hahaha! It’s funny but I was writing Germany off in the group stages but against England at Wembley a significant part of my brain has them as favourites and stereotypical phrases like “mentality” and “tournament know how” are in my head. I don’t even really support England either 😂
