Go on, geezer.
Here’s a little context to my “poor take”.
Many years ago, 2003 to be exact. I watched the Stanley Cup playoffs and fell in love with a little team from Anaheim. They were the 8th seed in the West and were expected to lose in the opening round. They didn’t. In fact, they made it all the way to the Finals. Unfortunately, they lost, but the player most responsible for the success was goaltender J.S. Giguere. So much so that despite losing in the Finals, he won the most valuable player award for the entire playoffs which is something that doesn’t happen often. During the presentation of said award and while both teams are on the ice, he accepts the award while crying. I found this endearing. It was honest and raw. Now the alpha community was quick to denounce this sort of activity. Calling him weak and soft. I didn’t care and he remains my favorite goalie to this day.
During the playoffs, it is tradition for the teams to form a handshake line and congratulate one another regardless of what happens during the game or series. It’s a sign of respect. It’s also a reminder that it’s a team game and no singular player is bigger than the game. Ever.
So I’m 100% in favor of players showing emotion after a tough loss. Especially when you know that your international career is over. It takes courage, selflessness and respect to acknowledge not only your teammates but the opposition and not just behind closed doors but on the playing surface. Unfortunately, Ronaldo doesn’t appear to have those capabilities.
P.S. I really wish this board had voice to text because my hands are cramping
