It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

In this case it’s more of a Messi > CR7 thing. I haven’t lived in Brazil in 2 decades so I can’t do any boots-on-the-ground reporting on that. I am about 25% Portuguese but even so… should a former colony support the nation that colonized it?

(I probably wouldn’t mind if Portugal won it all, but only if Ronaldo plays no part in it.)

I'll cheer for France as my #1 other country, as usual, so I guess there's sometimes some affinity for the old cousins. The 4 UK teams are usually right after for me so too bad they're going head to head with England already.

But yeah, Ronaldo... I don't follow much and that guy only rubs me the wrong way. Completely different feel for Messi.

Yeah it’s a strange one and I see it at play here too. With the islands being so close and Ireland being so poor for so long there was obviously mass emigration to the uk and very close ties, I should know I’m second generation brought up England but then moved back.

Because of that pretty much everyone has an English team here, and Celtic, and most Irish players of talent end up in England. In USA 94 everyone in England got behind Ireland too. But, equally, tonight, with the English national team? Everyone here is French…

As for the World Cup. I’ve never been a “team X or Y player” guy. If Argentina keep playing like last night and Portugal keep playing like against the Swiss I’d be delighted to see the Portuguese win as the best team.

I moved on to Wish. Wife and kids gone for the night. How drunk will I get tonight?
The answer was: quite drunk.

A few weeks ago I planned to have a couple of friends over for a vinyl night. First gathering of this kind in nearly a year. Couldn’t have picked a better date, because it didn’t take long for me to forget all about soccer and have a great time (my head hurts quite a bit this morning, though).

I hope England and Portugal advance today.
