It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

As our big family Christmas gift, we just picked up season tickets to the football club that plays just about a mile away from our house. They're in the USL Championship League, which a step below Major League Soccer, but we started going last year (the team's first year), and it was a lot of fun.
Nice! My dad and sister payed for my kids ticket for the 23-24 season for his Christmas present.

So everyone’s been doing their teams of the tournament. For some reason FIFA seems to have 18 players in their team which seems to tally with their football knowledge…

I’m going for a diamond formation and mine is

GK Livakovic 🇭🇷
RB Hakimi 🇲🇦
CB Varane 🇫🇷
CB Gvardiol 🇭🇷
LB Mazraoui 🇲🇦
DM Tchouaméni 🇫🇷
CM Griezman 🇫🇷
CM Bellingham 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
AM Messi 🇦🇷
CF Mbappe 🇫🇷
CF Alvarez 🇦🇷

I can get on board with 2. Livakovic’s penalty heroics do it for me but get bono. Amrabat had an excellent tournament but I think we’ve seen the emergence of a real star with Tchouameni. Can’t get on board with Otamendi though lol. Alvarez was the one I was humming and hawing about but I equally couldn’t think of someone else id have above him and he did decide the second most important game in the tournament.

He’s been solid for Argentina. He gets memed a lot for being brain dead for City and in the past for Argentina over the years

He’d had a lot of protection too this time. Argentina have basically set up to protect their back 4 and give Messi willing legs up top so he can just be a genius. I’d be more inclined to pick one of the defensive midfielders that protects him than him. I think a lot of it is that he’s rash, even when he does good things they’re recoveries or slightly desperate. I kinda have a bias against defenders like that. Good defenders for me are more like Varane who doesn’t need to do that because he was just in the right place to start with.

Meanwhile, Australian football undoes all of its goodwill generated by the World Cup run. Leading up to this, the suits running the league have arranged a very unpopular deal that fixes the grand final game in Sydney, rather than the stadium of the team that wins the league. On top of this, a bunch of Melbourne Victory fans watched Too many hooligan videos on YouTube before they went to their derby match against City, and started throwing things at players. Brutal.

Eugh. Di Maria is a prick. That was very very soft.
I thought the same thing. It was a pen, but it’s very soft.

Probably fair for the overall balance of play since Argentina have been the better team so far anyway, just unfair it being a dodgy pen instead of one of the many chances they’ve had

I don’t think it’s a pen actually. The arm to arm contact isn’t enough and he was already on the ground before foot contact. I also wish that prick nothing but badness. Great penalty by Messi though and you’re right about Argentina being on top. France look lethargic.

Well damnit. I’m going to stop talking now. Lol.

Idk I’ve always liked Di Maria even if he’s said this before. He’s a pretty underrated player.

Yeah his spell at united left a really sour taste in the mouth. He put fuck all effort in for a year, took a lot of money and has said some pretty harsh things since he left. It’s fair to say that we hate him more than he hates us, and he really does hate us.
