It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Exactly. Klopp is not the problem, except to the extent that he might be too attached to some of his declining players (cough cough Salah). The main issues are the injuries to key squad members, plus the general exhaustion/malaise following a season where they played every fixture possible, plus the effect of losing their best player last season (Mane).

As a Liverpool fan, I’d like to watch Klopp rebuild this squad from scratch and climb all the way back to the top over the next 4-5 seasons. I’m not sure he’s up for that, though.

As a united fan I’d love to see him sacked or walk away but it’d be a crazy decision and there is no universe where that happens and Liverpool are stronger. He’s the only manager who has so far been able to go toe to toe with Pep in the same league over that long a period. Plus Pep had petro dollars and he didn’t.

Something does seem a bit off with the club there right now though. They seem to have been shedding a lot of key strategic players in the running of the club over the last year.

I would disagree that Salah is in decline. He's not getting fed the ball like before because the midfield is so awful. Also, the replacement of Mane hasn't been consistent. Diaz gets hurt. Nunez is trying. Bobby gets hurt.

Klopp's issue is more attachment to Henderson and Milner. Combine that with he does so because he's not getting any new additions to fill out the midfield plus constant injuries to guys like Keita, Thiago, and Fabinho. There's also been a talent drain from the organization since the title runs. It would be foolish to sack Klopp and FSG are so focused on the sale that the club would just spin its wheels with getting the eventual repair job done.

Liverpool: How Jurgen Klopp's Reds have been hurt on the pitch by a 'brain drain' off it

Last year hurt your squad too. They played every single game available. Throw into the mix a weird World Cup year with the tournament in the middle of the year and it’s not a great combo. There is definitely a drop in intensity.

Henderson needs back up. He showed for England he’s still capable but as you get older you can’t do it every week. When he’s on his game he’s still invaluable as the only player with the ability and lungs to essentially be both a central midfielder and then drop in as an advanced right back when A-A becomes a winger. You just maybe need another younger player with similar attributes to learn from and step in for him. Elliot isn’t that player for me, he’s a 10 or a wide forward out of position.

Milner is the type of senior player that’s critical in a winning squad. Great pro, won everything and still working his arse off in training at 37. Your injuries have seen him leaned on way beyond the 15-20 games you’d want him to play.

Do we think anything will come out of this? I know the UEFA charges didn't stick. I can't see the EPL relegating Man City.

Hugely difficult charges to make stick, especially as they just won’t acknowledge the investigation, never mind answer its questions. I’d anticipate some kind of fine in the region of £10m and maybe a window or two transfer ban with enough notice for them to pre plan. And all of that for non compliance, not because anything can be proven.

He’s utterly failed to convince me as a manager from day 1, but to back a manager to the degree they did in January and then sack him 6 days later is just insanity. Either sack him 31/12 and let the new guy sign his choice of players or back him to work it out with his signings!
I agree. Sucks for you guys as you play them twice in a row. It was probably 6 points with Marsch but maybe there's a draw in there somewhere with new manager bounce... depending on who they get.

Or if they get someone in quick enough to be fair it’s Wednesday and Sunday. Honestly we faced two tough away games with new manager bounces in Wolves and Villa already and it sucks but we should really be beating this Leeds team at home and getting at least a point away regardless. I get what you say about 6 points but regardless of form Bell-end road is a hard place for united to go, they really fucking hate us there! It’s kinda visceral and nasty in a way we don’t get anywhere else, even Liverpool.

No patience in the PL
no league wins since early November. Their play has been terrible. Conceeding goals too easily and not scoring enough. Plus I bet Everton getting Dyche scared them a little bit to act. Everton were 100% going down under Lampard. Now, I think Dyche has a very good chance to keep them up which opens up another spot for relegation. Wolves, Villa, Leicester are starting to pull away and Leeds are in trouble.

When you're on the cusp of the relegation zone and were previously out of the PL for over a decade, you don't typically have much patience.

Why then give him a transfer window and back him with signings of his choosing though? That’s what’s bizarre to me. Either sack him 31/12 and let the new guy get players he wants or if you’re backing him with players then back him with some time, ie more than 6 days, to integrate them. All you have with this decision is a new guy having to work with the old guys players and having no ability to bring in people he trusts to help him out. Madness.

You're right but idk what Leeds are thinking. This move was probably irrational 🤷‍♂️

It’s a knee jerk off the back of a bad run but it’s kinda pointless this week because they were up against it getting points anyway and this year the start of March is still like 13 games left because of the crazy condensed Christmas World Cup and dead Queen season.

Personally I’ve never been convinced and would have sacked him at the start of January.

It´s not that he had any convincing record before in Leipzig

He also just didn’t I still any confidence on the way he spoke. He was too positive and upbeat even when it was clear there were issues. It made him look clueless.

Honestly though when he brought Chris Aramas into the fold I knew he was fucked. That guy was a laughing stock at united, there were player to press leaks about how clueless he was almost constantly throughout his 6 months of shame alongside Ragnick.
