It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

absolutely! Henry bias aside they go a great job consistently

I really can’t stand Carragher. Actually him and Neville really piss me off on sky. It isn’t analysis, it’s balanced bias, neither even attempts to hide it and Jamie’s arguing style is shouting over the top of people as if it gives him authority.

Yeah he didn’t say that. He said the Home Secretary used language with nazi undertones. She did, the Home Secretary is a nasty hard right piece of shit and he’s right on there for me. Sooner the Tories do one for a generation the better

I have 3 meetings in a row so I'm going to miss the Spurs CL tie. I honestly think that's a good thing because I have zero expectations of them going through tonight.

Did you hear they questioned him about that on the press conference. It went something like:

Press: If PSG go out this early will you be off in the summer.

Mbappe: If I judged my future on PSG’s champions league success I’d be long gone.

Top level shithousery there!

Living in France and near Paris, it is always fun to see PSG out of the UCL.

Is it safe to say that team’s priorities are to compete in the Champions League rather than trying to win their respective league?
It's a balance imo. Teams that are too far out of reach of the title...like Chelsea are gonna give it 1000% but then again City Bayern and Napoli will all try to win both without damaging the team by playing there starters non stop

For Bayern winning the league is a given so the success of their season lies mainly in how they do in cl. For most English teams i'd say the league title ranks higher. Man City might be an exception because they won the league a couple of times in recent years but not win cl

Who next?

Would you be willing to take some short term pain to not be lauding another big name now that we’re having this same conversation about this time next year?

Personally I think Potter would have been a much better fit at spurs than Chelsea but obviously that ship has long sailed.

I actually have no clue who I could see being appointed at spurs right now.

Yes, at least for teams without unlimited budget like PSG, City and a few others. To get into UCL can make a big difference in how you will be able to build your team for the next year(s). But then, once they have access to the competition and the millions, some teams don't give a shit. I remember seeing "top" French teams going to Europa League just to play with their team B and be defeated by some teams you never hear about.

It all depends on the league really. England not so much. The league is so competitive that it generally always comes first. Winning the champions league is like the cherry on the icing on the cake but you have to take care of domestic affairs first or you won’t be back again the following year. Winning the champions league is more about that extra prestige and glory and becomes an obsession for an English club when they dominate domestically but never win the big one in Europe. Think city now or united in the 90s.

For some continental teams the attitude reverses. For a PSG or Bayern not winning the league is a crisis, they almost take that for granted. Similarly while there are 2 in Spain not being in the champions league is a crisis because those two are so far clear on the rest. In that atmosphere winning in Europe is how you test yourself as a barometer.

Also England culturally is much more insular and much more concerned with itself than continental Europe is.

It's very clearly and obviously going to be Poch. I also liked Potter before Chelsea but Spurs cannot appoint another ex-Chelsea manager. Same with Tuchel. I think Tuchel would do wonders with Spurs but they cannot appoint another ex-Chelsea manager. De Zerbi is appreciated by the club but they'd have to pay Brighton and Levy won't want to do that. Poch is unemployed and free.

I would absolutely take some short term pain. Kane might go... I can't blame him, but we need to figure out how to be a club without him because we can't be so reliant on one player.

Poch loves the club, he wants to come back, he's mentioned how he's had some unfinished business.

Conte has talked down the club many times including last night. He's been offered a new contract but has refused to sign it. So we're just sleepwalking to 7th with a manager who doesn't want to be here.
