J-Jazz (Japanese Jazz)

anyone have any comments on how the new TBM reissues sound?

I decided to pass because I'm not buying duplicates anymore, but love to hear peoples thoughts and if comparable to other reissues, thx

I have 4 of 6 on the way, currently stuck in a USPS depot in Carson, CA. Will report next week (hopefully).

Update — Arrived today, cleaned, and I’m listening to Blow Up on headphones and it’s absolutely silent and sounds great. I think as good as the Impex 45rpm (which I sold when this went on sale), but I can’t confirm that until I can crank it without headphones. Maybe — very slight possibility of a maybe — a bit less range on the high end. Like maybe a slight bit less of the pure, stunning shimmering cymbals/hi-hat that I heard on the Impex 45rpm but, again, I need to listen without headphones when I can compare apples to apples bc I didn’t have my headphones when I sold the Impex set.

Now let's find Blow-Up as it's the last TBM reissue that I am missing. Of course it's sold out everywhere... Crossing my fingers to see this one showing at my local.

First three in this picture are :

Sumire Kuribayashi & Hideaki Kanazawa - Duo III (Japanese RSD 2022 exclusive)
Toshiaki Yokota And The Beat Generation (2) – Flute Adventure: Le Soleil Était Encore Chaud (Project Re:Vinyl last addition)
Uyama Hiroto – Freedom Of The Son (hip-hop beats from a very close Nujabes friend)

shows in stock now...

wow...ask and ye shall receive....interesting no vinyl release, maybe it's coming out in Japan

Pretty sure they will be eventually. Weird there are now pre-orders open already.

On a different topic, Disk Union website is down. Customer information leaked so they decided the shut the website down while they have not identified the issue.

Not sure this was the best thread for this but hopefully some of you enjoy it. If there is another thread for it let me know.

This sounds fantastic, my morning listening lined up for tomorrow!

In case you are not familiar, the guys at Tokyo Jazz Joints have a fantastic podcast which is well worth listening to - TOKYO JAZZ JOINTS

Thanks for posting this. Curious about your comment on Discogs that Earth Mother doesn’t seem to be in line for a repress. Do you know why?
Their bandcamp page says "no repress". and when I was at the BBE store in London last month, I asked them about it and they said it was the only one that didn't have plans for a repress from that series. Maybe that changes but it sure doesn't sound like they are going to repress that one.

If I had any sense, I would stay far away from this thread....

Anyways, I'll share a few J-Jazz albums worth checking out:

excellent list of albums. I have all of these and recommend most all of them as well. thanks for sharing! I hope to meet others on this forum to trade albums. I have a few albums I am looking for and would trade or pay a very generous amount if I can find the album I want. Who here might have the most complete Japanese jazz collection?

I've got around 2000albums, mostly rare japanese albums. from 50-80's but primarily 60-70's
most jazzfunk, jazzrock, jazzpsych, jazz contemporary, minyo funk, world traditional minyo, jazz and much more. I have instagram account which I post a lot of my stuff.

anyhow, would love to meet others who are passionate about Jjazz. I think I have enough interesting albums to trade for those who are looking for hard to find albums.

-Tim

Also for those into the freer side/avant-garde side of Japanese jazz, I cannot recommend this book enough(public bath press is awesome and worth supporting:

Also while I wouldn’t call the black editions label a Japanese free jazz reissue label (they’re a PSF reissue label really) it looks like they’re reissuing a ton of Masayuki Takayanagi
do you have link where I can find a copy???

fwiw..if you like takayanagi.... any interest in an original pressing of Flowergirl? with the blue cover? I purchased a copy a while back but considering to sell. it's a dubplate as you know, so metal disc with lacquer over it. uber uber rare. but none of them were "pretty" so they have flaws in the surface. mine plays back just fine, but has the pops where lacquer isn't perfect. but the condition is superb!!! but the dubplates never sound as good as real vinyl obviously. but this is an album that any takayanagi lover MUST have.

I'm thinking about this one, any recommendations ?

superb album... all the releases are good too... I have three diff ones... the 1st pressing, the repress in black vinyl and also special red vinyl version. the repressing just might be a touch better to be honest. beautifully recorded album.

Ran across this one pokin' around on youtube. Of course it's out of print.

forgot how good this album is... have it tucked away in my collection somewhere. is this getting repressed? that would be great since it's so hard to find.
