January 2021 Challenge Thread - It's All One Song! And One Raffle!

Day 8 - "She was an unknown legend in her time"

I never know what to play for this type of challenge... I consider that most of what I have is pretty well known, but then again I consume music at about 100,000% compared to most. Except you guys. Some of you delve even deeper.

Anyway, thought I'd play an album I really like that I haven't seen mentioned much on here.

I haven't listened to Robert Randolph in a long while. His Live at the Wetlands album was amazing, but the follow up studio albums felt more and more overproduced. I'll definitely give this one a spin, thanks for posting it!

Day 8: “She was an unknown legend in her time” – Play something from an artist that you think should be more well known.

Back when there were shows, these guys always sold out the small clubs when they came through town. Perfect atmosphere for their style of music, but would like to see them be more well known. I always thought the name choice was funny though, as there is a fairly well known Doors cover band in SoCal with the same name.

Alice Clark recorded two albums that were unsuccessful upon their initial release this resulted in her dropping out of the music biz all together to instead raise and care for her family. Needless to say her legend has grown since and while she is no longer an “unknown legend” she could always use a little more notoriety.

At one point, I was buying just about everything that Captured Tracks was putting out, and this record was such a great summer album. His story is such a bummer: he was this young kid that put out a couple singles and got snatched up by a record label. Shortly afterwards, he got Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is a neurologic autoimmune disease that resulted in severe weakness. He didn’t regain his strength for four years and finally put out this record in 2015, which was unfortunately overlooked.

Lianne La Havas - Lianne La Havas

I know she has a decent-sized audience, but I think her music shows the kind of talent, craft, and broad appeal that she should be a lot more well-known.

Day 8: “She was an unknown legend in her time”

More known as a member of Puscifer, her solo albums are pretty good.

I'm a huge fan of Chris Smither. He's definitely among my favorite lyricists, he writes with a wisdom and wit that just resonates...he really moves me. He doesn't have much on vinyl, but More From the Levee was just released on vinyl on RSD. This is great, but if I were to plug an album by him it would be Live as I'll Ever Be, which I stubbornly put at #50 on my N&G50, kicking out several excellent albums. But, we probably all had a dozen records at #51 right?

Here's a song from Live as I'll Ever Be. This one helped get me through a rough patch, it's like a warm hug and shaking-up from a close friend, for real. I haven't even mentioned his guitar playing, which is honestly sublime, so fluid and natural.

if I had it on vinyl I'd have used this for yesterday.

Nicolette Larson first sang with Neil Young on his American Stars "N Bars record.. While riding with Neil,.....well, I'll let her tell it...

"I got that song off a tape I found lying on the floor of Neil's car. I popped it in the tape player and commented on what a great song it was. Neil said: 'You want it? It's yours.'"

Things went well and Neil invited Nicolette to Nashville to work on Comes A Time. One of the songs on that record - 'Lotta Love'. The song on Neil's floorboard cassette - 'Lotta Love'.

While Nicolette is all over the Comes A Time record, she isn't on the song 'Lotta Love'. But she did cut it herself and it was a hit. Her debut album was diverse and fun. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. Subsequent records went largely unnoticed, she never enjoyed sustained success and died way too young at age 45.

The same week Nicolette's version of 'Lotta Love' was peaking in 1977, Comes A Time was on the charts.

Here's Nicolette singing on the title track. Her harmonies on the chorus are absolutely beautiful.
