Jazz

I bought a copy of the Don Rendell Space Walk today. I held off on the Windmill Tilter though, still holding out for an OG at some point.

Gearbox in general are fantastic, they are one of those labels that I am happy to buy without reading reviews on the quality. Their set-up is pretty amazing from what I have heard/read and they generally seem like they are really into their craft.

They are both very well done. I was thinking if its worth picking up the comp at some point.

The comp looks great and is a good indication as to which other albums will be in the series. I know we have chatted about this before @Andy but I will reshare here for those that might have missed it.

Tony Higgins has been spearheading the series and posted a photo of what I assume are the records that will be released. Alongside this I also broke down each track on the comp to highlight the album that it came from and looks like we will be seeing reissues of:

Michael Gibbs - S/T
Stan Tracy - 7 Ages Of Man
The New Jazz Orchestra - Le Déjeuner Sur l'Herbe
Harry Beckett - Flare Up
Neil Ardley, Don Rendell & Ian Carr - Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises (an absolute monster rarity)
Alan Skidmore - Once Upon A Time
John Surman & John Warren - Tales of the Algonquin
Don Rendell - Space Walk
Ken Wheeler and the John Dankworth Orchestra - Windmill Tilter

Interestingly there are also tracks from other musicians/albums not listed here (eg Collin Bates Trio and Dick Morrissey).

Man, I want that Harry Beckett bad. I enjoyed the rest of the compilation but his track stood out, and I love the other two records of his I have.

The Flare Up and Greek Variations are the 2 that I am definitely going to pick up from this series, the OG's are just unobtainable at this point. I'm really tempted by the New Jazz Orchestra as well. Really stellar titles to have chosen for the series.

The new Windmill Tilter is on my eminent list. Just a bit worried about supposedly thin packaging they use for Intl shipping.

Yeah that’s a worry. These aren’t thick tone poet jackets either, they are thinner flip-back sleeves so they wouldn’t take a bump as well. Are there any US distributors?

Is Decca shipping form there or here do you know ?

I think Decca is a UK based store, you could email them, tell them you are a little concerned about packaging & ask them what they use, and what the process is if there is a problem. Some stores are great (VMP is the best for this), but others aren't soo good for international customer service.

TBH I have the same issue with Acoustic sounds, they make you pay postage, I have a couple of (now) unlistenable AS records that I thought I would live with because of the return shipping.

Contact is routed to Universal Music Group, not holding up much hope for anything positive tbh. Perhaps it's best to wait it out until a store in the U.S,. gets this one in. Has any U.S. based stores been carrying the previous British Jazz Rendell/Carr releases ?

As far as I know, there is no U.S. release of this series so far, if ever. Word is that they aren't available to U.S. distributors either.

I got Space Walk from Europe, and it is great. As Selaws says, I expect the comp is a pretty good indicator of what is on tap. Once they pull the master tapes, there is no point in not doing the whole album.

At minimum, you can expect that 24/96 transfers have been made of all the tapes pulled, and the 24/96 Space Walk leaves nothing on the tab2le.

Windmill Tilter also is available here, and shipping to the US probably is less than from Jazzmessengers, who I agree are great. (My last shipment from jpc took 9 days, but as has been noted before, it can vary.) Looks like about $40 US shipped (about $62 US from Jazzmessengers).

Yea this is where I'd probably order from as well! Need to wait until I get back from a trip to order though to be safe.

Dusty Groove has been getting these Decca reissues in the US.
There she is. Thanks!
