Hello,

I sort of have my eye on this Impulse! set from Analogue Productions, but I'm not super familiar with the catalog and these specific pressings. For all of you Impulse! fanatics out there,

  • Are these the "right" 20 titles? I don't own any of these, and am only familiar with a few of the titles (I have a bunch of Blue Note, Prestige, Riverside, etc. records, but hardly any Impulse! titles).
  • How's the quality of these specific versions? Are these AAA? From the original masters? How do they sound? Any issues?
Any perspective you have is appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the 2 Coltrane and the Elvin Jones, They are well done, very thick Gatefold sleeves, weather they are AAA I couldn't really say , especially since the recent revelations about the Universal Fire , they could be from dupe tapes, I believe that A Love Supreme tapes have been missing for quite a while anyway . 20 Right titles, well that's up to you , There's a couple of vocal albums in there, I would have a bit of a listen to the titles to see if it's right for you, I would probably say at least 6-8 are definitely worth having .Looks like quite a few are out of stock/back ordered so that might hinder the choice a bit , They are also 45 rpm, which certainly helps with the sound, but you have to flip the album 4 times and it can interrupt the flow as well, depends on you ? You could probably get some 70's Japanese pressings of these for less and they would be pretty great . Not sure If I've helped or hindered but a lot to think about, if you have any other questions I'll try and answer for yo

These are the right titles, even though the real 20 best from the label should include more Coltrane albums.

The problem, however, is that these may not be AAA (or if they are they probably used safety copies) because most Impulse masters were burned during the Universal Studios fire eleven years ago as we discovered recently.

Thanks for your reply. The 2 Coltrane, Mingus, Oliver Nelson, and John Lee Hooker albums are all sold out except through a purchase of the entire $1,000 set. Based on the copies for sale on Discogs, it's basically $650 for those 5 records. In my rationalizing brain, that would be $350 for the other 15 records in the set, which would be okay if they were killer sounding versions of killer titles. Hadn't thought about the Japanese pressings from the 70s. That's an interesting idea. You talking about the ABC rainbow label reissues?

Those rainbow labels from round 76 or these from 1972 . I've got some of each and they are pretty good either way . Regarding the Titals, I would tend towards more Trane, especially Crescent which is a Must have and some of the later more Challenging Impulses, but that's just me . I think if you were going to spend $1000 , I'd make sure I'd want to listen to all those albums a fair bit, unless you want it as an investment, which may or may not work out for you later on, who knows ?

Thanks for reminding me of the existence of those Japanese reissues. I think I might put together a collection of my own by sourcing from that series.

Yep, no worries, Most of Coltrane Impulse are great, Africa/Brass ,Live At Birdalnd, Live At Village Vanguard , Crescent, Coltrane, Impressions etc and if you want to get a bit further, Meditations, Transition, Sun Ship are great too, but a little more challenging. . .you can't go wrong .

Hey Jazzbo's. So for the past few years I have been regularly listening to a fantastic podcast series called 'The Vinyl Guide'. Theres a ton of episodes out (173 to date) and they typically last around an hour. They cover a ton of different genres and usual consist of interviews from band members, musicians, tech support, mastering experts etc. Im currently on episode 76 but have listened to a select few of the more recent ones (I tend to jump when its a topic/interviewee that grabs my attention - for example I jumped and listened to the latest one with Mosaic founder 'Michael Cuscuna'. The host, Nate Goyer, is a self proclaimed record nerd and has a ton of rare Jazz and Blues records, as well as an interest in rock and punk music. Even when its a topic or interviewee that I dont particularly care for I will listen through because his interview style and anecdotes are so infectious. Anyway, I have compiled a list of the Jazz related ones that hopefully will be of interet:

Ep173: Michael Cuscuna of Mosaic Records

Ep157: Joe Harley - The Blue Note Tone Poet (thoroughly recommend if you have picked up any of the Tone Poets, really interesting)

Ep148: Living Colour's Will Calhoun

Ep105: Don Was, President of Blue Note Records

Ep086: Bernie Grundman & The Art of Record Mastering

Ep071: "I Called Him Morgan" Director Kasper Collin

Ep070: Blue Note Recording Artist Larry Ridley

Ep026: The Jazz Scene & Norman Granz, Ask the Vinyl Doctor and Cliff Notes on Sun Ra & John Cage

Ep012: Charlie Parker Recordings by Dean Benedetti

I’m sure quite a few of us would be happy to recommend some Impulse titles for you. As others have said, the Coltranes are pretty much all great, I love the McCoy Tyner albums. I’d add some Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Mingus and Alice Coltrane too.

I actually listened to Harley and Cuscuna yesterday. Good stuff!

Its funny that this Impulse! chat has popped up as I have been hunting the OG's down recently. Its crazy how good some of them are for the relatively low price they can be found at. The more 'well known' ones are, of course, more money but even the more sought after mono pressings are, for the most part, affordable. As long as the expected delivery date is correct I should, fingers crossed, get home tonight to find an original Mono pressing of Duke Ellington & John Coltrane ‎(A-30) which im super excited about!

I just adore Crescent. It's a such a beautiful, dark, creeping album. Wise One is sublime, Drum Thing is exquisitely dark and delicate to close the album. Bessie's Blues I find a bit baffling, it jars so much with the flow of the album, but that jarring, carefree interlude has grown on me, it's just a gorgeous album.

I think I got into Impulse before I really took a deep dive into Blue Note, so I got a lot of early pressings Impulse titles for pretty cheap. Impulse is a close 2nd for me to Blue Note as my favorite jazz label. Need to look at Prestige more though.

Yeah im on board with that, Blue Note is my favorite followed by Impulse! as well. Its next to impossible to find original Blue Notes here in the UK whereas I find that original Impulse! records tend to pop up more frequently.

So wait, I’m able to add the two Analogue Productions Coltrane albums to my cart and check out. Will I ever get them...?

Also, will i be charged immediately for back ordered albums?
