Decided to give VRC a try this month and likely next month. Love some HiFi Louis and the Bill Evans from next month is a gem! Anyone else a member?Screenshot 2025-04-01 at 1.13.44 PM.png

I was a member....the Coltrane release is excellent. The Nina Simone one sucked sadly... really pixellated low quality album art. Warped record. Mastering was just okay (although I bet that was more likely due to the original recording/tapes). Was a bit bummed about that since Coltrane was really well done.

@MikeH do you have any of the Pure Pleasure reissues of these titles to compare?
I just did a quick A/B of the new Slugs Vol II to the PP Vol. II

The PP is fine and certainly adequate. The new one by KG is a step up in all the ways KG is normally (to me) a step up from _some_ previous cuts -- more air, better separation, better clarity, nice soundstage, etc.

Fwiw, I also had the Japanese Slugs Vol. 1 that I sold, and, based on my recollection of the JP Vol 1, my impression of the new KG Vol 1 is the same as my impression of KG cuts compared to _some_ previous cuts. All the traits above but less energy and immediacy. In this case I prefer KGs Vol. 1 to the Japanese Vol. 1 I had. That is not always the case for me, as I've had plenty of BNC's and TPs where I prefer a RVG cut (even a late repress) over the newer, shinier, cleaner KG cut.

I've only really had a chance to listen to Musa and really loved it. I started listening to the Charles Rouse but got distracted by my kiddo who picked up his toy saxophone and said he wanted to "do a jazz show" :ROFLMAO:

lol. you're on the right track w him!! The Rouse sounds quite nice, and my copy was silent (my Slugs has a bit of surface noise but not bad). I think Strata East titles were recorded in different studios by different engineers, so there's no one sound for them. I have nothing to compare the new Rouse to, but I'm guessing it wasn't the most audiophile original recording to begin with -- compared to a Dunann Contemporary or something like that. Again, I think it sounds good and am very happy w it. I just don't think it's a demo disc.

He's a lil jazz man. A little over 2 now. We have a small jazz club in our town and he did a kids jazz music class there every saturday for 6 weeks. Then they gave us free tix to a show and we took him one sunday night to a brazilian jazz show with some friends of ours. He was mesmerized and has since been wanting to play his toy saxophone every day. Really hilarious. The other day I asked him what the song he played was called and he said "uh....jazz!" :ROFLMAO: Whenever I'm near my turntable downstairs, he asks me to put the jazz record on, which is Sahib Shihab's Summer Dawn. He loves it and runs loops around the living room to it.

Fantastic. You should show him some of the SNL “What’s Up With That” sketches, with Fred Armisen fake-playing what I think it a toy sax in (to me) a quite humorous way, along with even more humorous dancing by Jason Sudeikis.
