Jazz

One of my favourites from a few years back, Muriel Grossmann returns with her new album on RR Gems from Estonia.

From the sound of the sample track, it’s another belter.

Use code RRGEMS07 at checkout for €5 discount. @POGunter I think it was you who I learned about Muriel from.

EDIT: A few Discogs users suggesting a repress of Golden Rule is coming next year. Don't miss it if you did the first time around - there's a reason it's sold for over $150 on there.

Insta-purchase. Golden Rule is one of my records of the decade.

£33 is on the top side of my budget for new releases, but after missing out on the first album I put an order in for this straight away. I have heard nothing but good things about Muriel Grossmann.

Cheers @Mr Moore

and just like that I’m pulled back in by a @Mr Moore recommendation and instant purchase. Been away for a while with work and newly recent parenthood, but happy to see things on this front are going from strength to strength. Have so much to catch up on and apologies if any messages were missed. Will take me a while to get up to speed with the different mechanics of this forum but looking forward to all the new music being shared/discussed.

Congrats on the new addition to the family! And great to have you back! Plenty to catch up on!

Hey, congratulations mate. Welcome back.

A handful of Jazz oddities are up for sale on the Sounds Of The Universe website today:

Tribe Hometown: Detroit Sessions 1990-2014
Detroit’s acclaimed independent jazz collective. Rare/unreleased tracks from the latter years.

Sokratis Votskos Quartet Sketching the Unknown
Im really tempted by this one. Lots of free-jazz elements by this Greek jazz group. @Mr Moore give the sample of the second track, Quadrum Waltz, a listen....you may like it?

Soul Jazz Records presents Steve Reid Rhythmatism (1976)
Very limited 1000-copies COLOURED vinyl of this reissue.

Edit: Ok so the Sokratis Votskos Quartet is fire!!! Im going to have to pick this up the next time im at my local!

New Jazz guy here...curious what people think of the Jeff Goldblum albums?
He's not the most well-regarded artist around Jazz fans, but it's great if you like it. I won't tell you "listen to the real thing", as I think there are no wrong or lesser entrypoints to jazz. As long as an artists sparks your curiosity to delve into a new genre and discover other musicians, its great. So, bottom line, listen to Goldblum all you want, but try to listen to the artists who have influenced him, and it will give you a better understanding/appreciation of what he's doing.

Thanks for your reply. Is he not well regarded because he's a famous actor, so he's not taken as seriously by Jazz enthusiasts, or is it a talent thing?

To me he just tickles that same itch that Michael Buble used to hit. His career in music feels more like an homage to the music he loves and those that paved the way for him as opposed to a commitment to taking Jazz further. Jeff Goldblum is the Greta Van Fleet of the Jazz genre

Disclaimer: I’m not knocking Michael Buble or Jeff Goldblum, I respect the niche they inhabit, it’s fun

Thats a fantastic comparison. His album has a lot of guest feature, and he clearly has talent, but to compare him with a full-time jazz musician would be a disservice to the musicians. I have really tried to enjoy his music but I personally find it to be quite vanilla.

I think both factors play into the public's perception of him. But, as others have said, I believe it's more of an issue of commitment. People don't take him seriously because he's basically using his platform as a celebrity to play safe jazz, and not really making an artistic statement in the genre. Like I said, I don't think it's wrong to listen to him. Everyone has their own entrypoint to the genre, and they are all valid as long as they make you discover things you didn't know about or didn't think you would like.
