Jazz

Is Brubecks “Jazz Goes To College” a well regarded album? Feel like I never hear it mentioned but every time I play it I’m blown away by the performances on there. I can’t help but think Paul Desmond has the prettiest, easiest on the ears tone ever. Anyone have a good sounding copy of it, I see there have been recent pressings but not sure which to jump on? Also Dave Digs Disney ❤️❤️❤️.

It is very well regarded. Along with Jazz at Oberlin, many think it represents the best of early period Brubeck.

The amount of ‘what are the chances’ moments I have had on this forum never ceases to freak me out.

For a while now I have been posting a record a day on Instagram, reading up on that record and writing about it. I was just last night digging through my Brubeck collection and pulled out 4 to choose from and included in those 4 are....At The College Of The Pacific and Jazz At Oberlin. Weird!

Fans of the Shamek Farrah album that so many of us got as a £3 accideal, SVART Records out of Finland are reissuing his other Strata-East album, The World of the Children. Originals go for suitably insane prices on discogs so this is a welcome reissue. I just managed to pick the last one up off of Amazon (not an accideal unfortunately) but, here's the link to the label's web store for anyone interested.

There was a £3 accideal?? That’s outrageous! I have the Superfly pressing of First Impressions and it’s superb, I’m definitely interested in this one you linked, cheers!

Interesting. Has anyone purchased a release from this label? I know Pure Pleasure is in its own league, but if this reissue is anywhere near in quality I'm in.

I don't have the vinyl in hand yet, but couldn't resist streaming the new Junius Paul release 'Ism'. Really great improvisational jazz, with elements of funk and gospel sprinkled in. For those of you in London, his release show is at Church of Sound tonight, with Makaya McCraven on drums and Shabaka Hutchings also joining. jaimie branch is playing earlier in the evening (though already sold out). If only I wasn't 5000 miles away...

Also, not sure how many copies remain, but the limited vinyl release is still available from International Anthem.

I didnt realise he was playing tonight otherwise I would have definitely gone! Myself and @Mr Moore were lucky enough to see Makaya McCraven live earlier in the week, and Junius was on bass. He really is a spectacular player.

I have been looking forward to 'Ism' as well, the sample tracks are superb. Looking forward to the album, although postage through bandcamp makes the whole deal quite expensive for me so im likely to just wait until I see it in store.

So great! I was lucky enough to see Makaya three times this year. Really amazing shows, and had the opportunity to chat with him after one of his daytime sets at Pickathon. I was with my family, and he engaged in a really sweet conversation with my 10 year old (who plays piano and is learning trumpet). In any case, Junius was on bass and Joel Ross was on the vibes. Needless to say, some of the best live jazz I've ever seen.

Thats amazing, I was just saying that I will definitely be seeing Makaya perform again next time he is in London, so much energy and he gives it his all. That sounds like a fantastic gig, I saw Joel Ross live earlier in the year and it was amazing, he played for over 2 hours with just 1 small break in the middle.

The pianist at his gig the other night was a guy called Greg Spero and he was fantastic. I actually posted a photo on my instagram story and he messaged to ask if I would be able to send him any, which I did. He then posted it on his account which was nice of him. He has another group I was meaning to check out called Spirit Fingers, their 2018 album had great reviews!

Very cool, will check them out. BTW, forgot to mention that Shabaka Hutchings is also joining Junius tonight.

Oh man, just making the regret even higher :ROFLMAO:

Although I shouldn't complain, Im seeing Shabaka in a couple of weeks with the Comet Is Coming, and I have seen him play a couple of times in the summer. Never a dull moment when he's playing!

I was thinking I'd heard of him. The Spirit Fingers album was great - pretty sure the vinyl was from this year - although it has a pretty awful cover. Well worth checking out.

I have to say, to counter the rest of you, that I couldn't really get into the Junius Paul on first listen. I liked the sample tracks I'd heard but found the opening tracks of the full release a little difficult for me. But that's what I like with jazz - the same people can like artists A, B, C, D and E but disagree on F. I'm going to give it another try later on in any case.
