July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

You guys checking one-hit wonder lists? Fiona Apple is a one-hit wonder, for example, if you go by the criteria that she has only been in the Hot 100 once. There are quite a few good artists with solid albums for which the same is true.

So, you're saying I could have listened to Portugal. the Man this morning instead of Outfield? Where you were at 7am? 😆

Haha! Sorry, I sleep later when I'm working from home.

Just in case it wasn't clear, my post wasn't meant to say "don't pick these bad albums guys." It was in response to the people who said they didn't have any one hit wonder albums. They still might not, but I was surprised by some names on the Wikipedia USA list at least.

Day 05: DIFFERENT STROKES
A widely disliked or divisive album that you personally love
Neil Young - Old Ways

It’s likely a bit of an overstatement to describe this album a widely disliked or divisive, I would probably use overlooked or under appreciated as adjectives to best describe Old Ways. The 80s were a weird time for Neil, lots of interesting detours taken during the “Me” decade and Old Ways is what happens when Shakey desides to make an old school Country Record; Nashville session players + many of the genres luminaries (both Waylon & Willie make appearances) come together and have a good ol’ time. If you Like Neil Young AND Country Music you probably enjoyed this album a great deal but I am sure many fans (maybe?) cast it off as just another one of his 1980’s genre exercise’s but in my opinion this album is more substantial and probably my favorite 1980s NY record (yeah, Freedom is pretty great too).

Day 06: ONE HIT WONDERLAND
Play an album by a one hit wonder
Pavement - Cut Your Hair [7” Single]

I guess this all comes down to what constitutes a “hit” the only track that Pavement ever released that could be confused as a hit is “Cut Your Hair” and for the record it did reach the top ten (barely) on Billboards Alternative and Modern Rock charts in the US. Also, I have Crooked Rain Crooked Rain on wax and Cassette Tape but I figured I would go with the “One Hit” since that is what the theme is.

Ha! I love Pavement so much that it never occurred to me as a pick!

Yeah, I don’t have a lot of LPs with true one hit wonders on em. One hit wonders don’t translate well to wax in the age of streaming. If I had Good News For People Who Love Bad News on vinyl I probably woulda spun that. I mean, “Float On” was on a Kidz Bop compilations for christ sake!

I really should get that one. It was my gateway to them. Not sure why I haven't picked it or M&A up yet.

JULY 6
ONE HIT WONDERLAND

Well since @gafacaode swiped The Vapours out from under me, I have to switch it up.
Icicle Works' self titled debut from 1984
I actually forgot I had this record, but cleaned it up and gave it a spin. I really only remembered the hit "Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)" but it is still a nice listen. I really like "Reap the Rich Harvest" and "Love is a Wonderful Colour".

You couldn't escape the "Birds Fly" video in 1984 it felt like to me. That chiming guitar and roto-tom drum sound screams 80S!!! to me

The Verve - Urban Hymns

Yeah, I know they were huge on the other side of the pond, but it is my right and duty as an American to be oblivious to the rest of the world and its tastes and desires. Here in the US, The Verve had exactly one big hit, "Bittersweet Symphony," and later they showed up as the background music for a car commercial or two. I remember picking this one up in high school, as well as Blur's self-titled, based on their one hits in the US, despite being told by friends that the rest of the respective albums sucked and were nothing like the one cool song on the radio. Both purchases led to discovering bands whose discographies are much more rewarding than their one hit, and to my friends increasingly wanting to ride in other people's cars because of my "weird" taste in music... of course they had no idea how much weirder it would get.
