Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion II

The companion to Use Your Illusion III. What an album. I got halfway through this and realized I think I played it for a day last month, and I try my best not to repeat, but I don't feel like listening to Use Your Illusion I this morning, so I'm sticking with it. Oops. Nothing much to say that I haven't said before except Estranged is the greatest Guns N Roses song ever written.

....I jumped into the river too many times to make it home....

THANKS, TIPPER GORE
Play an album with a parental advisory sticker

Kanye West and Jay Z - Watch The Throne

I do not support exorbitant mark-ups on vinyl records. I can't believe this cost $130. This is not my personal copy. But, it's here and I felt like listening to it, so there it is. It's an okay record. Looks cool, though. And their shipping was remarkably fast.

...ball so hard motherfuckers wanna fine me....what's a 130 dollar record to a motherfucker like me can you please remind me.....haha

DAY 15 - SOLO

IMG_20200716_085153.jpg

I don't think I am alone in thinking that, on every Sonic Youth album that applies, the appearance of a Lee song was a highlight.

While he had put out experimental and instrumental albums during the tenure of Sonic Youth, the dissolution of the band made it seem only inevitable that he might begin releasing song-oriented albums. The question for me was if, because he had only had one or two songs per album historically, the magic would hold up across the entirety of an album.

It did not meet hopes or expectations when he finally did.

It exceeded them.

Day 16: Lo-Fi

The Libertines - Up The Bracket

View attachment 56892View attachment 56893
You think Up The Bracket is Lo-Fi? I am genuinely curious. “Lo-Fi” is such a weird term it is both a style of music and also synonymous with low quality recording. I got in a bit of a spat with someone Discogs regarding the other user wanting to apply the “Lo-fi” style label The Beach Boys’ Smiley Smile album.

I suppose I was thinking of the fact that it’s a very hands off production style and the playing is ramshackle and they’ve left in bum notes etc. All of which I love, it adds to them for me, I don’t like their third album because it’s massively overproduced for me!

JULY 16
UNPOLISHED PRODUCTION
Play something lo-fi

Waxahatchee - Ivy Tripp

C79CAC02-53CF-4338-970C-BF2DA7964F82.jpeg
Fuzzy guitars and synths kick off Breathless, the opening track on my favorite Waxahatchee album Ivy Tripp. This was my introduction to Katie Crutchfield, and I’ve been a fan ever since. This album is poppier than most of Katie’s other work, and it shines through on tracks like La Loose (my personal favorite song of hers)

Play something lo-fi
Kurt Vile - God Is Saying This To You...
906849F1-1B28-4847-990D-F1B569441490.jpeg

I almost went with Bee Thousand since I have been on a GBV kick of late but figured I would leave Guided By Voices for @MadLucas . Kurt Vile carries on the Lo-fi tradition that would make Bob Pollard proud, especially on his early albums, they sound like 4 track recordings made in a quiet basement studio.

JULY 13
MONDAY THE 13TH
Play an album with thirteen tracks

Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond

Side One
1. Dancing Madly Bakcwards (on a Sea of Air)
2. Armworth
3. Myopic Void
4. Mesmerization Eclipse
5. Raging River of Fear

Side Two
1. Thousand Days of Yesterdays (Intro)
2. Frozen Over
3. Thousand Days of Yesterdays (Time Since Come and Gone)
4. I Can't Feel Nothin' (Part 1)
5. As the Moon Speaks (to the Waves of the Sea)
6. Astral Lady
7. As the Moon Speaks (Return)
8. I Can't Feel Nothin' (Part 2)

I hidden Psychedelic Rock gem from 1972. 13 tracks of progressive awesome. This album (as the kids would say) RIPS!!! I can't believe I discovered this band for the first time this year. The music has just been out there waiting for me to hear it for almost 50 damn years. Pop a tab of acid, strap on your spaceboots, turn the lights down, get on the floor, and sail away to the beyond with......CAPTAIN BEYOND. Yeow!!!!!!!

twisting far and near every cold reality....flows a raging river of fear....

Oh shoot... Back to the drawing board then...
LOL, I am sure he has PLENTY of options. You got first dibs my dude!
Oh oh oh, I have a plan B in mind now!
GBV is usually my go-to lo-fi but I just remembered this other band's compilation that fits the bill. I haven't played in quite a while.

I was going to, but that seemed pretty obvious for me.

And I have something else I have been meaning to spin for a minute, recorded between '82-'91 on "whatever."

It looks like it was added back to that sub 2 months ago....I just removed it again.

Day 14:
An album with lots of love songs:
The Patterson Twins - Let Me Be Your Lover
I mean... the album has a fair amount of love songs on it... not to mention it’s funky as fuck, so that made me want to listen to it again.
image.jpg

Day 15:
A solo album from an artist previously from a band:
John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
I don’t think I need to tell you which band he was from. But this album... there’s a reason it’s displayed on my wall shelves. It’s one of my favorite Post-Beatles releases by any of the Fab Four.

Day 16:
An album that is Lo-Fi:
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
I won’t say I listen to this one all the time, but the few times I do pull it out, it really scratches some kind of itch that I don’t feel another album hits.
(Also discogs says Lo-Fi in the genre tags so I’m rolling with it)

and tomorrow:
Day 17:
An instrumental album:
J Dilla - Donuts
All the respect to Dilla. RIP
