July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

I was leaning into that unpolished production with my pick, now I'm having second thoughts... Should've gone lo-fi genre, maybe?
I think you are good. It’s certainly open for interpretation. Like @gaporter stated they were going more in reference to production than a musical style. I think quite of of few people taking part in this months challenge are big fans of “Lo-fi” as a genre/style and it is fun to see everyone interpretations. I don’t think there are really right or wrong selections (except The Beach Boys’ Smiley Smile that album is definitely NOT Lo-fi no matter what you may have seen on Discogs in the past).

Yeah, don't stress over criteria, nobody is being judged on how well their picks fit the theme, you can take in a myriad of different directions, like @Joe Mac took "unpolished" and played an album that had a ramshackle vibe while others are playing albums that are more literally lo-fi. It's however you want to take it!

Shit, I just remembered I meant to play Smile for food day!

Hahaha! I never knew there was a lofi genre, I’m guessing it’s an American thing maninly? I’d always taken lofi to be the opposite of hifi so kinda the opposite of overproduction and sheen and in a way anti-prog, prog is the worst type of music for me...

Because of that my mind would go to early uk punk or stuff like the libertines where it’s more about the song or the energy of the performance and all the warts were left in. That sound of things almost falling apart but being all the better and more thrilling because of it is exactly where my mind goes to when people say lofi!

JULY 15
GO IT ALONE
Solo album by someone from a previously established band

Peter Tosh -- Mama Africa

Formerly of Bob Marley & The Wailers, Tosh put out some pretty great records after his time with Marley, including this one.

UNPOLISHED PRODUCTION
Play something lo-fi

Dead Moon -- In The Graveyard

I was instantly hooked on Dead Moon from the second I heard Fred Cole's voice. They barely edge out Wipers for my favorite Pacific Northwest band.

Okay, now caught up 😅

I know that a ton of music in the 90s got the descriptor of "lo-fi" but I'm with you. If you're calling "lo-fi" a genre, should "overproduced" be a genre too? I feel like "lo-fi music" is such an umbrella term, because you can make music in any genre "lo-fi" if that's what you're going for or you just lack high end equipment. I think its because its mostly heavier forms of rock that tended to be underproduced and raw that people began to get a specific idea of what "lo-fi" sounded like rather than just using it as a general descriptor

It’s a musical style so much as “Americana” or “Grunge” is a style and is anything broader than “Indie”? If someone uses “Lo-fi” as a style descriptor I would understand what they were getting at.

I mean yeah, it's really just semantics, obviously i will have a certain idea of the meaning of the term "lo-fi" when making the theme but it, like every theme, is open to interpretation

Somewhat related: I always found it funny that music stores had a "Pop/Rock" section, that was basically everything that wasn't rap, techno or world music 😂

Right? World Music always gets me. Where else will you find Salsa, Japanese City Pop, Afrobeat, and Sitar music all under the same "genre" heading?

I wonder if that same discogs person edited Wikipedia. LOL
LOL! No, but he sure as hell used that wiki page to justify his position. Though the Wiki pages cited sources are spurious. I think one of them was the All Music Lo-Fi page that contradicts the point of the album being listed as Lo-Fi. It was a whole thing. I think @GentleSenator (amongst others) wanted to punch us with the all the back and forth. Like how could anyone classify “Good Vibrations” as Lo-fi?

Ha! yeah, after @LeeVing posted, I went and read through that thread and listing. That dude was very persistent!
