July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

JULY 2
BELONGS IN THE LOUVRE
Your favorite album cover (or just one you really like)

Silver Jews - American Water

I always loved the cover for this masterpiece of an album. The simplicity, the colors, and even the font are perfect.

Next month will mark a year since we lost David :(

DAY 1 - FREE PICK

Up on the East coast, there is a fabulous brewery out of New York called Singlecut. All of their beers are named after song lyrics or are otherwise nods to famous pieces of music. My favorite beer by them is called "Hop Sounds." The can artwork is even a take on the famous Beach Boys album.

So, when I was placing a curbside pickup order yesterday, that was the number one thing I wanted... And they were out of.

ME: What other beers by them do you have in stock?
THEM: We have a new one called "Posters on the Wall," it's an unfiltered IPA, 6.8%...
ME: I'll stop you there, I want to try that one.

I think this can design is the finest tribute of any of their designs I have ever seen, and the beer is even better.

I think we all know what I picked.

It's not Ace Frehley but Gene'll do in a pinch I suppose.

DAY 3
THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD

Babyshambles "Delivery"

Babyshambles was a side project of The Libertines' Peter Doherty. I love their 3 records "Down in Albion", "Shotter's Nation" and "Sequel to the prequel" as much as I love The Libertines ' music. So many great and absolutely amazing songs. 💜💚

I completely forgot to post this last night!

Day 2
Artsy

Everyone knows this is my favorite album of the century. It’s also my favorite album cover. I thought that it was brilliant statement in regards to the album itself how we’ve used technology to come together while still apart (and vice versa- it’s complicated). My wife tells me it’s actually a famous piece of art: The Lovers II by Rene Magritte.

Punch Brothers - The Phosphorescent Blues

Day 3 - THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD: Play a 7" (or a single/EP of some sort if you don't own any 7"s)

Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness/I'm Sick Ya'll

Back at it again asking you guys to make some clicks to see the record (3rd picture in the post), but this is a great 45 with great songs on both sides!

JULY 3
THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD
Play a 7" (or a single/EP of some sort if you don't own any 7"s)

Possum Dixon - Nerves b/w Who Are You

I don’t own many 7”. Im too lazy to get up that much. I haven’t even listens to the ones that have come free with albums.

But, I have this one! I loved Possum Dixon as a teen. It was one of those bands that every single one of my friends listened to, but didn’t seem to exist outside of our cars and rooms. It’s still impossible to find things from them. I don’t know if the music is actually good or if it’s comfort-music at this point, but one day I’ll actually pull the trigger on one of those $150 copies that pop up on Discogs every once in a while.

Fun Fact: the singer gave my friend a haircut before one of the shows. And another band member signed something “stay away from fast women with slow drugs” and it was a piece of advice we never forgot. Haha.

...and I think it’s gonna be a long walk home...

I have been longing for their first two albums to get reissued! "Watch the Girl Destroy Me" should have been a much bigger hit than it was.
