July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

I have actually come to a place in life where I don’t think I’ll ever bother with anything other than 12” records. I have a few 10” and a dozen or so 7” but storage is such a pain and I don’t care to keep sleeves and stuff for various sizes. This 7” has been in my collection for a bit considering I bought it new in 2000.

Day 03 - THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD

Ella Fitzgerald And Louis Armstrong ‎– Ella And Louis Again (His Master's Voice, 1959 First EP Pressing)

I have a handful of these Ella & Louis 7" HMV EP's and they are fantastic. They were such a fantastic combo and every song just transports you to a different era. Wonderful stuff!

I wonder if I'm On Fire is the most covered song by Springsteen? Surely someone has done some research on the matter....

That's a pretty interesting mix of covers. I really liked quite a few of them.

That article, on the other hand, is written with so much cynicism that it was hard for me to read, so I just started clicking on the videos and listening. Why is it okay to just completely shit all over different genres of music that aren't the target demographic? I don't understand how "journalism" in the music industry got to this point. Okay, rant over. Now, I'm off to scour more covers on Youtube.

JULY 3
THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD
Play a 7" (or a single/EP of some sort if you don't own any 7"s)

U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For

I'm definitely not much of a U2 fan. Hell, I don't even like the A-side title track. But damn do I love the song Spanish Eyes on side B... definitely my favorite U2 song. (Deep in the Heart on side B is also pretty good)

Neal Francis - These Are The Days b/w Changes, Pt. 1

One of the things I love about this forum is how much great music I’ve discovered, Neal Francis being a prime example. Both of these songs slap, but I’m especially fond of Changes, Pt. 1
And yes, Neal, I’m trying to keep the funk flowing!

I believe you have an address to send that to.

I’m just kidding. But that’s awesome!

DAY 3: THAT COULD BE A HIT RECORD

...and it was a hit record! Actually, it was their last.

The Doors - Riders on the Storm b/w Changeling

My favourite Doors song, part of the singles box set I got on my 21st birthday. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #74 the week ending July 3rd 1971, the same day Jim Morrison passed away. It later became the Doors’ final top 40 hit, reaching #14 in September of that year.

Day 3: That could be a hit record

Murder by Death and Twin Limb - 7 Series (Part 7)

One of my favourite bands, Murder by Death, has been doing split 7 inches with their friends for about a decade now where they cover each other's songs. I own all but the first, and this most recent one with fellow Louisvillians Twin Limb is by far my favourite. MBD does an incredible rendition of "The Monolith" and Twin Limb puts a cool electronic spin on a really underrated MBD track, "Hunted." I spin this all the time. Probably my two most played songs in the last few years.
