Day 4: Philadelphia 76ers
Play an album from an artist from Philadelphia
KiloWatts – Six Silicates (Remastered)
My only visit to Philadelphia was to spend the better part of a day chez KiloWatts after getting robbed in NYC the night before (fortunately only what little cash I had and not my 60-day Greyhound pass and/or passport!). Rarely has a breakfast beer tasted so delicious. I also got to sit in on a session of he and Amagine recording a vocal track for their second Super Galactic Expansive album. An overall excellent experience.
Play an album from an artist from Canada or play a very old album, prehistoric you might say.
I wouldn't say Toronto is bad or not good, at least recently. They have one finals appearance and one championship (2019). Like the team, I never really gave this band much of a chance, but they are both pretty good.
The Weather Station How Is It That I Should Look At The Stars
Toronto native Tamara Lindeman with an album that isn't old (it came out this year), but it sounds it, like an early-70s singer-songwriter obscurity attaining cult status.
I was away this past weekend so couldn't participate the first few days, but this one seems really fun so I'm going to try and play catch up.
Day 1: Boston Celtics
Play an album from an artist from Massachusetts or from Ireland.
a few years back I stumbled upon a Reddit thread of an artist excitedly promoting their first vinyl release, so I checked out the Bandcamp and found some really dope, chill, lo-fi, Hip-Hop instrumental beats and instantly bought a copy of "City Nights" by Sweeps. turns out he's from Massachusetts and has since released about 6 more vinyl releases of which I continue to support.
Play an album from an artist from New York state or from an artist who makes interesting wardrobe choices.
from Buffalo, NY is Westside Gunn founder of Griselda Records which along with his brother Conway The Machine and his cousin Benny The Butcher really helped put upstate NY Hip-Hop on the map. ever since they put out a relentless amount of releases, but this is the one that started make heads take take notice of what they were doing... unfortunately I was a bit late to the party and getting an official pressing is pretty much out of the question, so had to settle on a Bootleg..
I've been needing to give this one another spin so I'm glad it fits today's challenge. The rainbow splattered wax is gorgeous, but my phone is in the other room charging, so no picture of it.
Day 5: Toronto Raptors
Play an album from an artist from Canada
Taylor Ashton – The Romantic
These days he lives in Brooklyn and is married to Rachel Price of Lake Street Dive but I have many fond memories of young teenage Ashton when he was still living in Vancouver and visiting Victoria often. In fact, somewhere there is a picture of a much skinnier, much younger me introducing a much younger, much less bearded Taylor at a show I was hosting in the earliest weeks of 2007. He was already writing brilliant songs at 15 and, like a good whiskey, he's only gotten better and more complex with age. I hadn't seen him in a couple of years when I found this at my local, due to a combination of covid and parenthood keeping me off the festival circuit that kept us in touch, so this was a sweet surprise.
If I were a more fiscally well-to-do fellow, I'd treat the entire catalogue of Taylor's former band, Fish & Bird, to a vinyl release.
Perhaps one day it could still happen.
