June 2019 Vinyl Challenge

I’ve got the whole week off, so why not play some catch up?

Day 4 - In The Pocket
For those that know the dynamic rhythm duo of Tyner McCoy and Elvin Jones, there are none that really compare in the world of jazz but I’d accept Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams as a rebuttal, but that’s about it.

Wayne Shorter - JuJu

See “Mahjong” for a prime example.
Elvin Jones is on another plane of existence on this one.

Day 5 - String Theory
A whole orchestra backing Beth Gibbons?
Yes, please!
The whole band sounds fantastic too.

Portishead - Rosland NYC Live

Day 6 - All That Brass

I guess the obvious choice would have been a jazz selection, but like @ranbalam Im gonna use this day to highlight one badass band—The Budos Band!

This is their fourth album and the only one not titled with the number that denotes their position in the band’s discography. So instead of being called IV the album was titled Burnt Offering. With this release, the band sprinkled in some psychedelic flavoring along with some heavier, Sabbath like riffs. Highly recommended! And as always, if you have the chance to see this band live—do it!

I am sooooo behind, but I guess I'll start anyway.
Day 1 - Who Are You?
Welcome to the June challenge! Play a record from your go-to genre

My go-to genre is one I call "Vaguely Twangy." Not strictly country or Americana, though those definitely fall into the category, but that twang might be the guitar tone, a vocal quality, a banjo, a mandolin, or none of those things and just strike me a way. But Heartless Bastards are one of my favorite bands and I think it's Erika Wennerstrom's voice that really lands them in my made-up genre.

This one is high on my list for sure!

Thanks, I almost picked this record as my 10 for yesterday!

EDIT: For me, it's a tie between Let it bleed, Exile on Main Street and Sticky Fingers, with Beggar's Banquet close behind
Exile is my favorite, but I can’t call it perfect because it’s so muddy in every version I’ve ever heard.

Day 8 - Boxed In

Well, I forgot to do Day 7, so I’ll go back and cover that one when I’m through with this boxset.

Released last fall, this 6LP boxset for the 5/19/74 show is pretty nice. Plus I love challenges like this that motivate me to spin the whole thing. See you all in about 3 hours.

1974 was a special year for the Dead because it’s the only year to feature Owsley Stanely’s masterpiece sound system The Wall Of Sound. I could see how this influenced the sound systems of today, the man was a stone cold genius. R.I.P.
