Day 4: Hype a local artist

Black Walls - Acedia

I could have gone in a number of directions for this one, but when I think "favourite local artist", I always return to Ken Reaume. He was a finger style guitarist/kinda folk singer when I was in high school, who I heard of from him opening for a City & Colour show. I downloaded a few mp3s from his website and I was obsessed. He released three albums under his own name, the first of which I didn't track down until a few years later at a Toronto shop on a rare trip into the city (it was limited to something like 200 and was already a few years old at that point). Never found a copy of his second. I finally saw him live in fall '07, opening for Owen Pallett in Ottawa, where I had recently moved for university, and I picked up his third album there.

A couple years later he changed his stage name to Black Walls and really leaned into the "pysch folk" aspect. This was his first of just two albums with that name, and one of my most played albums of the decade. I had the chance to meet him a few times since moving to Toronto. Sadly he's retired from music now, but his five albums are all still huge favourites.

Madlib ‎– 420 Chalice All-Stars (Madlib Invazion, 2017 VMP R&HH Pressing)

I was going to play Flight To Brazil but this record seems much more appropriate!

(Image to upload once its all back up and running)

Day 4: Oneness of Juju - African Rhythms

From my hometown of Richmond, VA. A great under the radar fusion of a bunch of styles in one funky package.

My purchase of the first pressing of this is still the worst wrapped parcel I have ever had. I got it for an amazing price a few years ago (£25 total) in decent shape from the photos. The seller placed a piece of cardboard each side (smaller than the 12x12 sleeve) and TAPED IT TO THE SLEEVE!!! He then placed it in a black bin bag, taped it shut, and slapped a label on it. Somehow it arrived without being bent to hell but unfortunately, I couldnt remove the tape without taking some of the print off with it. Super annoyed but at the same time the record was in great shape and it was still a good price. Such a shame though.

Poorly wrapped record packages are the worst.

Brightblack Morning Light - Motion To Rejoin

Every album Brightblack Morning Light released was basically a hazy puff of bong smoke dancing in the streams of sunlight that peak around the edges of the of the Grateful Dead tapestry that was hastily hung over your living room window to block out the day...figuratively speaking, of course.

Friday (05) – Marijuana – play a record that makes you chill bro

So I have fairly limited experience with the old 🌿, but did have a brief spell , but I’m unstable enough on booze so decided it was better to spend the money on records. This album and band is the definition of chilled out and I’m pretty sure these Bristolians partake prodigiously....really should legalise this stuff to take away the criminality that goes with the drug trade ..would make society a whole lot better and richer if it was taxed.

One of THE best albums of the 90’s...and this was awesome in my old car with a huge boom bass speaker in the hatchback ..you could hear me coming from miles away ... I got this sealed vinyl copy for free after an amazon marketplace seller sent it as is with a delivery sticker on the front ..one photo of a few creases and automatically refunded .. so it’s even sweeter ..and who plays the cover ...
