June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Thursday (04) – Hype up an Artist that comes from a city/state/country you are or have lived.

These guys mix local rythms from the Brazilian northeastern region with samba, rock and psychedelia.
This is their first album originally from 1994 and recently reissued on vinil. The title is a play on Jorge Ben's Samba Esquema Novo and you really hear Jorge's influence on tracks like Livre Iniciativa.

Day 4: Places I Lived
Since I spotlighted someone from my home state of New York yesterday, this time I'm going to someone from my current state of Florida...

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Damn The Torpedoes

Day 4 - South Cackalacky
Needtobreathe - Rivers in The Wasteland

This one was hard for me. I've mostly lived in SC my whole life, but there aren't really any bands I'm crazy about from here. There are some soul and jazz legends that were born here, but most of them left at a young age and I don't have any of those albums (definitely need some) except James Brown. Never really was a a Hootie or Marshall Tucker fan. I respect some current artists, like Shovels & Rope and Toro y Moi, but have never bought an album of theirs. While I don't feel strongly about this band, my wife loves them and followed them coming up. They are a CCM band generally, which isn't really my thing, but not just that. They put on a pretty good show. So, I went for this one for my wonderful wife.

Death From Above 1979 "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine"

More like my former home town although I've been told I went to the same highschool as these guys, or maybe one of them went to my school, shit who remembers high school? Anyways this record goes hard, I'm enjoying it my wife isn't a fan of the selection at the moment!

Day 4: Hype up an Artist that comes from a state have lived.

I never really listened to them...being from my home state didn't mean a whole lot, just not my taste in music at the time.

Duck fight goose ~ CLVB ZVKZNFT

IMG_20200604_222423.jpg

After three years in Suzhou, I ended up following a different career in Shanghai where I lived for a year. Once considered the kings of the underground rock scene in Shanghai, Duck fight goose is a band loaded with talent and experimentation, they started out with a more math rock/post rock /shoegaze and then in this release switched to full on electronic, groovy upbeat it's as if it could soundtrack of the future. The shift to electronic was a bit of a surprise but understandable as two members focused on creating solo electronic albums. Most notable 33EMYB released Golem in 2018 two years after CLVB which ended up being a much beloved album. In November of 2019 the group got back together but under a different name Yadae and released Ai which is the pinyin for 爱 meaning love. The album is named appropriately as it is takes their sound on a new adventure one into a new world of smooth synth. Hope you get a chance to give them a listen and Welcome to the CLVB

Band of Horses from South Carolina?

I don't think they're from here, but they live here now. I've almost picked up an album of theirs quite a few times and for some reason never have. I know I really like the first one.
Yeah, Ben Bridwell I think was from SC originally, Maybe. I know he formed Band Of Horses out here (after Carrissa’s Wierd broke up) and then a some point relocated the band to South Carolina. Also, that first BOH‘s LP is special and their second album is not too far behind.

Oh, cool, I didn't know that. Wiki says he grew up in Irmo 'til he was 16. Makes more sense why they moved here. I'll add 'em to the neverending list!

Day 4: Hometown Hype

Living in Edmonton throughout my entire life kinda limits my options here since I don’t have any music from any Edmontonian artists (no Mac DeMarco, Purity Ring or k.d. lang, not yet at least) but I have one record from an artist born further south in Fort Macleod and raised in Saskatchewan:

Joni Mitchell - Blue

Friday (05) – Marijuana – play a record that makes you chill bro

D' Angelo "Voodoo"

This is a beautiful record that combines elements of Neo-Soul, Jazz and Funk with ambient music. It feels very relaxing to me and it's a perfect record to play on a late night. 🌃🍷

So I have fairly limited experience with the old 🌿, but did have a brief spell , but I’m unstable enough on booze so decided it was better to spend the money on records. This album and band is the definition of chilled out and I’m pretty sure these Bristolians partake prodigiously....really should legalise this stuff to take away the criminality that goes with the drug trade ..would make society a whole lot better and richer if it was taxed.

One of THE best albums of the 90’s...and this was awesome in my old car with a huge boom bass speaker in the hatchback ..you could hear me coming from miles away ... I got this sealed vinyl copy for free after an amazon marketplace seller sent it as is with a delivery sticker on the front ..one photo of a few creases and automatically refunded .. so it’s even sweeter ..and who plays the cover ...
