DAY 14 - MIDDLE EAST

IMG_20200614_221924.jpg

This needed some research.
Since Pakistan is technically considered "far middle east," and India is considered part of Asia, my selections fell off a bit.
Out of the 5 or so albums that fit with the countries considered middle eastern, this one I wanted more face time with. This is a compilation of Cem Karaca singles with one of his bands. Late-60's/early-70's progressive folk/rock.
Now... if I could only figure out if this is a German or a Turkish pressing for my Discogs page...

第十四天: middle East

Om Kalsoum ~ Alf Leila wa Leila

View attachment 52002

Considered the voice of Egypt I stumbled upon this record after a day of vinyl hopping between stores and ended the night at my minds eye in Cleveland. I asked the owner to point me in the direction of middle eastern music and little did I know he was of middle eastern descent, after talking middle eastern jazz he lead me to Om Kalsoum and said I wouldn't regret this album or Aqbal al layl, I choose one thousand and one nights. I've been dying to get back up to Cleveland to pick up , night has arrived but due to covid I may just have to settle for discogs.

I've been looking for my Oum Kalthoum record to post for Day 14, I suspect it's been "borrowed" though as I can't find it anywhere :/

Day 14: Middle East

I looked through my whole collection several times today to try to find something appropriate for this theme. I bought Oriental Jazz when it was the rotm but soured on it before I ever opened it, partly due to a really good chat on the old forum about appropriation and representation. (And even if I still liked the music, no way my Persian girlfriend, who grew up with it and hates middle eastern music, would let me play it out loud!) I've actually been listening to a lot more middle eastern music on my own in the last few years digitally.

For this challenge, I'll cheat and play a small-run CD I bought in 2015 by a Montreal pianist named Stefan Christoff and various collaborators, called Duets for Abdelrazik. According to the Bandcamp site, "Duets for Abdelrazik is a cultural project aiming to express musical solidarity for the ongoing struggle of Abousfian Abdelrazik, a Sudanese-Canadian jailed on the recommendation of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in Sudan. It is difficult to describe in words both the horror of torture but also the sustained determination by Abdelrazik in the struggle for justice. In music great Montreal artists recorded Duets for Abdelrazik is a musical project coordinated by Stefan Christoff, an attempt to illuminate Abdelrazik’s struggle."

It's really a beautiful album and features Radwan Ghazi Moumneh on buzuq and Sam Shalabi playing what became after this one of my favourite instruments, the oud.

Day 8 - Jazz

David Grisman - Mondo Mando

I picked up this album in a whim because the cover intrigued me and I'm sooo glad I did. Such a hidden gem! This is a bluegrass inspired Jazz Record that is so endless charming, playful and whimsical! It transports me to the magical spot on the cover every time I spin it

Day 14: Middle East

I’m reaching with this one but I don’t think I have any other options...

V/A - Woodstock Four

I don’t think India counts as part of the Middle East, but Ravi Shankar’s performance here that closes out the album is as close to that region as my collection & my knowledge of music has gotten so far.

Day 15 - electronic

Noname - Telefone

I have pretty much no purely electronic music so was looking at rap and saw this album and just wanted to play it. Actually feels very organic to me so probably not a great choice for today, but it seems very fitting with the times. Love it a lot, and wish we could get Room 25 on vinyl soon.

Day 14 - Middle East: The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God

I’m giving up on hoping I’ll locate my Oum Kalthoum record. That said, I’m just going International for this, but a slight nod to the Middle East with Irish trad music influenced by instruments with Middle Eastern origins, like the Bouzouki.

Day 15 – Any kind of Electronic

Bonobo - Migration (Ninja Tune, 2017 First Pressing)

Bonobo is probably my favourite electronic artist. I managed to see him live a few years ago at the stunning Alexandra Palace here in London as part of his migration tour. It was just a fantastic performance, with killer music, lighting, and guest features throughout, with many goosebump moments! I have included a photo from the gig below!
